A rough measurement shows 54". As I recall the '70 rear axle is 1" wider than the '68/'69.

Anyone have the actual dimensions? I'm going to need a better rear end for my AMX when the new engine is installed.

Thanks,
-Steve-

From an earlier post but flange face to flange face:

1968-69 AMX & Javelin are 58" posted and some have measured 58.5”.
70 Javelin & AMX 58.5"
71 up AMX & Javelin 60" to 61
”.
American 56.5
Gremlin/Hornet V8 58.5

Don't know about an early Rebel but I believe the 71 and up large cars were also 60" to 61".
Jeep had narrower and may have been 54"?

Hope this helps.

My rebels original rear measured 61.25. Its a 69 model. But it's a control arm/coil sprung rear.

Are you measuring width between the tube flanges or axle flanges? That seems a bit wide for the '68-'69 AMX & Javelin.

Most every axle measurements are "axle face" or poorly worded - same thing "flange face". Don't believe I've seen "tube face" measurement as this would not be consistent for any kind of replacement or build plan.

Do you want to know the housing width for a 68-9 over the axle tube flanges?

edit- I have a bare 68 housing so tell me what you want to know if it's for a 68-9

If it's not a bother, yeah. Sounds like the standard measurement is axle flange to axle flange (mating surface of wheel).

Why bother with an AMC 20 in any performance car unless their is no other option? Here is a crate rearend that will bolt in and offer myriads of options and of course be bulletproof.

Yes yes yes, pad spacing is the same and perches are on the correct side

Who said he was using an AMC 20? It's clear to me that his plan is to not use one

53.25 over the tube flanges.  RH tube is .75 longer than LH.  43.56 CLs on spring mtg holes.
If you want pinion offset, let me know as.this gets stored Saturday and that's it for measurements

wheel backspace is more important than axle width especially with a leaf spring car.

That's what I'm really after. The stock AMC 20 in the '69 AMX limits the choice of wheels due to it's width. I'm going with a 9" with the new engine.

most late model AMC wheels had 4.5 bs. In a leaf spring car with 275 rubber on a 4.5 wheel you are very close to the spring. For the AMX Likely you will need to move the springs inboard and mini tub to fit big rubber regardless of axle width. Just not enough room in the wheelhouse

Might be a bit wide for the AMX, specs on that rear axle show 60.5" axle flange width.

Right now an 8" wide wheel with a 5" backspacing is a perfect fit. Problem is there aren't that many 8" wheels with a 5" backspace. The Weld Prostar is but the set I bought a few years ago had a crazy amount of run-out and for some reason the front ones tore up a pair of front hubs. I got rid of them. Most appear to be 4.5" or 5.5".

5" backspacing 16x8's used to be more common than 15x8's.

Factory Jeep (5 on 4.5" TJ's) 15x8's are 5.5" backspacing so that's in the ballpark anyway.
XJ, ZJ & TJ 15x7's are 5.25" backspacing, so they're also in the ballpark but narrower obviously.

I'm not so much suggesting you use Jeep wheels,
but maybe look to aftermarket wheels meant for Jeeps.

Went out and measured the rear axle in the '69 AMX. I removed the rear tires & brake drums then clamped a section of 1" square tubing to each axle face then measured between them. Measures 58 3/4" Also measured the leaf spring width, it's 43 1/2".
