I am in the process of removing the evaporator and the supply duct from my 1972 Ambassador to re-insulate. The old insulation both on the evaporator box and internal dampers and on the duct has become brittle and is crumbling.

Removal of the passenger side duct and the heater box and blower was straightforward. I'm now running into problems with the evap box and drivers side duct. I tried removing the pad on top but there are three screws that are quite difficult to get to. The head is on the backside. I circled one in the picture. There is one phillips head screw also circled in the picture that secures the bracket that holds the duct. If I can remove the pad the screw to the duct should be more accessible. Likewise if I remove the duct, the backside of the screws that hold the pad would be more accessible. I have tried all kinds of wrenches, sockets and offset screwdrivers. Catch 22.

Has anyone done this without removing the entire dash? Please let me know how you did it.

Many thanks in advance!!
