The 727 in my Hornet supposedly has a 6 cylinder converter which supposedly should stall higher behind the 360 with significantly more torque. I understand the school of thought here, but I’m wondering if anyone has experience with this and what their impressions are.

I drove the car for a week before buying it with a stock-ish rebuilt 360 in it and it did seem to be a little looser than what a stock converter would be. I now have my more “warmed up” 360 in the car and am wondering how it’ll feel. I ran a B&M Holeshot 2400 converter in a TH350 begins this same engine in my Javelin that stalled around 2500 and I loved it for an all around converter with my 2.87 gears.

Coming back to this thread now that I’ve got 1,000 miles on the Hornet with my old 360 and the torqueflite with 258 converter. I was hoping to see about 2,500 stall. Feels like it’s more like 2,000. Anyone have luck with any off the shelf converters or rebuilders?

If your interested in a rebuilder we use Perfect Converter Company in Walton Hills, Ohio. Very happy with their work. They have even built a couple of custom converters for us. Shipping may be the downside but at least check them out.

Josh, I highly doubt that that is a 258 converter. We can't even dream up a shade tree job that would get a 258 converter to match up with a 727. My guess is someone is mistaken.

i believe the full size jeep with the 258 ran a 727 trans

That’s correct. I’m putting out quite a bit more torque than a factory 258, so in theory, I should be flashing this thing at a higher RPM. However, I’m a lot lighter, so once again in theory, that may negate a lot of it. At any rate, the butt dyno says it’s around 2,000 stall give or take.

Ideally, I’d have the $$$ to install a gear vendors overdrive, 3.31 gears, maybe a Summit 8601 cam, and have a converter built to about a 2500-2600 stall. That’d be a lot of fun to daily drive and occasionally take down the drag strip.
