| Got a 65 American 440HT with vacuum wipers I'm switching to electric. Got a 65 AMC wiper and figure I can mod the plate that holds it against the firewall, find a similar 2 speed control switch and knob for the dash and wire it. Anybody done this? |

Vacuum motor reciprocates, electric runs continuously in one direction except to park. The linkage is different. ------------- Content intended for mature audiences. The plates are very different and a type of steel not easily formed without damage. Find a donor car would be my suggestion. You need it all, not just bits and pieces - you need switch, wiring, plate, transmission (linkage) and so on. Also - the park angles are set different. (although that can be changed) American -  Javelin, AMX -  Gremlin, Rebel, etc. are different, too - and depending on years with some. Note how the motor is even HELD at a different angle.......... flat for some, at an angle for others.

i too like vacuum wipers, when both are in good working order. mostly after 40, 50 years, they are not, without some effort. i've had surprisingly good like with a disassembly and cleanup and relube of the motors, but of course the booster pump needs a rebuild kit since when that's bad rubber cracks and leaks. the motor though is just apiece of leather or organic resin fabric or something, and simply cleaning (full disassembly) and lube with something thin like plain old Vaseline) more than does the job. i ran my roadster with no booster for over two years (but this is soCal so little rain, and none of that mysterious cold, dry stuff that falls from the sky, whatever it is), because i think the pump down there is ugly (yes, that's the reason). but i added a pump for the LeMons Car Weeeeak Rally, since it was a pacific northwest drive, where it has been known to rain... of course since i bothered to install it, i did not need it (inverse Murphy's Law). ------------- 1960 Rambler Super two-door wagon, OHV auto 1961 Roadster American, 195.6 OHV, T5 http://www.ramblerLore.com |
