Did AMC follow any other manufacturers with regards to the steering wheel splines and taper? Also the smooth portion of the shaft below the splines? Wondering because I need a little more room than the factory wheel provides. It's got power steering, anyway. Don't want an aftermarket wheel if I can avoid it. Maybe one of those chrome chain jobs...

What year and model are you working on????  Most mid sixties and up AMC all used Saginaw Steering columns and you can swap most steering wheels from GM's and AMC's.....Jeeps too.

Since 68 AMC used the GM steering column. You can search through a big selection of GM steering wheels.

At one time long ago, I was contemplating the X wheel from the early 70s. Seen in the 442 and other GM cars in both big 15" and smaller 14" or so.

67's used the GM/Saginaw columns as well.

Long time AMC fan. Ambassador 343, AMX 390, Hornet 360, Spirit 304 and Javelin 390. All but javelin bought new.

Just for kicks I tried a 63 Thunderbird wheel. Except for being a lot smaller in physical diameter at the hub, it looked great. Getting the horn and turn signal kicker to work would be a project. Modifying the center emblem for a Rambler insert would be another.

My '69 had a two tone wood and black GT wheel from the late '80s on it when I bought it. It's still there. Everything works too.

I put a 70s Mustang II wheel on a 62 Classic wagon.
The original wheel crumbled. I had to move the horn swipe on the column to get it to work.
I used some JB Weld to hold the swipe.  It's been 7 years and still good.

I really like my 14" Grant wooden wheel. Easy to install with adapter.
This photo taken when new, but now with some time and wear it matches the rest of the wood grain inside nicely.

If you don't look back at it when you park it, you bought the wrong car

I had a 72 Javelin with that same wheel in the 1980's........

and parking it in the sun caught me off guard more than once when the inner metal ring was too hot to touch!

I think at some point they redesigned it so the ring was smaller than the wood hoop.

The rimblow did take some time to get used to after having a thick rim 3 spoke with an early 71 center but love the look. Tilt wheel helps getting it in a comfortable place.

That's a beautiful wheel. I just can't get used to a wheel that size. Sure looks good, though.

Oh I get it! It's weird driving such a skinny wheel that is so big! This is the 3 spoke I used before I finally found a rimblow. It was much more comfortable but IMO didn't look near as cool! lol

Id like to buy that 3 spoke wheel. For my 73 Hornet hatchback.

I'm not a "big guy". 5 1/2 feet tall, 150 lbs with a wet coat on. But in my 64 Classic, my legs barely slide under the wheel to get in. I love the look of giant factory steering wheel. I love that my knuckles drag on both doors when turning. Old 60's cars is all I ever used to drive. Went through a 10 spell without them. After driving these newer cars with superpower steering and tiny wheels, it's something to get used to again. Big steering wheels and no power steering never bothered me before, but since I didn't have anything else to compare, my ignorance was bliss.

CamJam took a well worn wheel and customised it. You can see what he did in his thread.

The problem with that is that I don't have a well worn, slightly worn or hardly worn wheel to start with. Thanks for posting his thread. It turned out really well, now I'll just have to find a wheel to try my hand at it
