Getting ready to convert to a manual setup on my 73. Does anyone know if the pushrod is the same for manual or power? Guess I will find out when its apart but would like to know beforehand. I will be using a Wilwood master

Harry....Power brake (disc or drum) used a straight rectangular bar from brake pedal through firewall to the bell crank assy that is mounted on the engine side of firewall.  The booster and master cylinder bolt to the bell crank assy.  On Manual Brake, the master is bolted right to the firewall with 2 bolts/nuts/studs and the pushrod is attached to the master with a clip, which kind of makes it one piece, so to speak.  The other end bolts to the brake pedal...so the pushrod is completely different, I think you are going to have to get creative.

Yes i had a 72 Matador with manual drums years ago so remember that. I guess when I remove the whole booster and bellcrank I can check to if the rod will reach through to the pedal.....Thx

Sir, do you know if I take the clip and pushrod out of the manual master if it can be used in a disc brake master?  I am converting a manual drum to a manual disc and purchased the disc brake master, but as you stated it does not have a pushrod attached as the manual drum master does. Just wanting to know if the clip and pushrod can be used or do I need something else. The owner doesn't want power assist.

Your advise would be greatly appreciated.

Jay,

I have never tried to do a Manual Drum to Manual Disc Conversion....only Manual Drum to Power Disc and Power Drum to Power Disc.  I don't think a factory type Power Disc MC has the right piston in the bore to accept the Manual Drum Rod, you might have to get creative to get to the end game.

My 73 Javelin had power disc up front. The owner had a shop remove the booster before selling. It had the original MC and proportioning valve. Never had an issue and preferred it over a power disc setup of that era.

It think they either adjusted the rod or mounted it in a different location on the pedal.

It depends on if the pushrod will fit the bore of your new MC and if its the right length. In my case the new Wilwood MC had a smaller bore and the one manual pushrod I had from a Spirit would not fit inside the bore. I ended up using a Wilwood adjustable pushrod kit (way overpriced) which is fitted and now working properly. The clip you refer to is to retain the pushrod from coming out of the bore when brakes are not applied and therefore hold the brake pedal as well. Since there is now no clip to keep the new pushrod in the bore I have to make a stop for the brake pedal arm to keep it from swinging backwards. Hope this is helpful
