Subject: Gauge Packages for '77 AMC applications and Newer

Gauge pods Originally built for the 1977 AMX and the Pacer can be refitted in almost any AMC car providing they are correctly refurbished. That service can be provided for. It can be done by correctly rewiring the gauge pod and providing under hood wiring with installation instructions. If interested provide a PM for further information.
There are two gauge packages available. One has the Clock, Vacuum, Ammeter and oil pressure gauge the second has the vacuum gauge replaced with an engine temperature gauge. That one was configure for a Pacer. The first was used for the 1977 Hornet AMX, and the AMX versions of the Concord and Spirit. They were also available for other models. The tachometer can be considered as a separate subject in most cases.
To repair and/or rebuild the wiring harnesses they will be configured and matched to engine configuration based on the harness jig that represents the under hood configuration of the various applications.
Instructions will be written to represent the installation intended so that they can be installed in their new location with a minimum of problems.
This represents what some of the purchased gauge packages look like when received. The wiring is incomplete or missing completely including major components. Of course something received in this configuration is not able to be re-used. I can supply full rewiring so that the gauge package become essentially plug and play with almost 100% original colors of the wiring. If given the application they can be returned totally checked out for operation with the proper sending units, instructions for installations and if requested painted or dyed to match your interior colors using OEM AMC colors. I can also sell fully compatible gauge packages providing your application information is correct.

If when your recently purchased gauge package arrives and it doesn't look something like this one:
Which includes the wiring, vacuum line for the Vacuum gauge plus all the proper fittings and connectors. That can be taken care of. A PM sent would help to solve the problems. Or If you have not ordered one yet, a complete unit can be provided.

Hello everyone.
I have been working with John on converting a small car Rally Pak cluster to be used on my Concord. I just wanted to let you all know that John has been very easy to work with and I couldn't imagine working with anyone else on this project. John's knowledge is vast and he has worked with these gauge packages before. He's been very good about keeping me informed on his progress and he's been very astute at filling in all the details for me as he goes along. There's been no hiccups along the way that he hasn't had a solution for and I am looking forward to getting it back to install in my car soon. So if you are interested in converting one of these Rally Pak gauges for your AMC small car... I can assure you that John will take care of you the same way he has taken care of me. Thanks for all your hard work John!

I put the AMX gauge cluster in my Rebel Machine way back when Got the cluster and harness out of salvage yard. Fit great under dash and looked pretty correct too. Walt L.

They do look great, I have installed two of them, one in Valerie's AMX, a base model car that did not have one installed for 1980 and one in my Spirit as pictured. Even through they were done some 15 years ago it took a couple of years to get all the parts from a salvage yard complete. Fast forward to today and getting one complete is pretty much a lost cause but I can build or repair them as if they were OEM at the present.

Just so you guys know... I've recently been told that unclJohn had a health set back... so he may not be able to help on this anymore. I can take pictures of the set up he made me and he gave me installation instructions as well.

Hi, I have tried to rewire it myself, so far so good it's going into a matador sedan so the length of wires would have to be custom. Since you guys generously provided me a diagram I'm good. The only issue is wiring the ammeter shunt as I will tackle that last. A friend of mine gave me part of a harness from a non temp setup and mine looks to be good enough for now in comparison. Pics soon

Hi everyone - my first post (you're supposed to announce when you do that, right?)
As
you see in my signature, I have amassed quite a few AMCs, so it was
high time I joined this forum!! There are other non-AMC cars in my
collection, too.
I have read through this thread. I am sorry to hear about unclJohn's health issue. That was quite a while ago - did he recover and is back in good health!? I hope so.
I have this 4 gauge rally(?) cluster in my Spirit GT, but the wiring harness I have looks a little shoddy. I want to redo it. Someone mentioned a diagram. Is there anything you guys can provide me, or point me in the right direction, for rebuilding this harness, please?
TIA

The harness can be redone.. you just need to replace the wire and the connectors. You may have to scrounge ebay and craigslist which will take time but that is all I did. It took me a while to come up with all the necessary parts for mine.
Uncljohn is better but has lost the ability to communicate on the forum or work on cars anymore. I can send you pictures of the instructions he gave me in an email. Private message me your email and I will email them to you as soon as I can.
I promised John that I would help other people as much as I can and I intend on doing so becasue he helped me so much.
Also.. welcome to the forum... you will make a lot of good friends here. I know I have.

uncljohn passed away about a week ago, there's a couple threads talking about it.
Welcome to the board, I don't think signatures show up right away (I can't see yours).
I don't have any info on these gauge pods,
but it might be a good idea to start a new thread

It's always sad to see other AMCers pass. We had to say goodbye to a good friend this year, too... and a AMC Racer back in this day!
Thanks everyone.

Hey guys - it's a nice day outside here today and thought I'd tackle this project. Was anyone able to find a diagram? I'm going to poke around the internet again and see if I can scrounge something up.
Thanks - Hope everyone is doing well.

SO... I did it! My Rally Gauges are in. Instead of messing around with the [useless] AMP meter, I decided to take it out and replace it with a VOLT meter. I used a black faced BOSCH one I found at Advanced Auto Parts (which once apart, you can un-brand it easily by just sanding the little cover shield thingie and repainting - there's no brand markings on the face itself!)... I gutted it and took it out of it's encasement. I drilled holes in the cluster housing and was able to wire it with existing leads in my harness (one of which feeds the TACH, and the other ground). Added a couple nuts on the inside on the posts so the spacing would be right, plus some little rubber pieces I cut so the angle would be right... Just a little rigging!!!!! BUT Easy Peasy!! I also pulled out the whole AMP wiring and retaped. Works like a charm! The only wires going into engine bay are the Oil sending and the Vacuum hose. I grounded inside, instead of in the engine bay.
Thank to everyone who tried to help!

Yes! I was going to do that. I just took pictures on my way into work this morning! :) I'm going to annotate the picture because there's a couple things I'd like to share...
That's IF I can post pictures. My signature still doesn't show up, so I have not have been fully enabled on the forum yet.

OK. Here's
some pix. Sorry they came out a little blurry, but you'll get the gist!!
1. Yes. I
know. It's not an AMC Radio!!!! Well, working AMC Radios are hard
to find. I happen to have 4 AMC Radios, 1 of which is working and
installed in my Concord. The original radio is actually 1 DIN in size, or
so I thought... It's not quite 1 DIN and I had to Dremel out the hole
slightly. I guess I'm committed to aftermarket radios now!! This is
a radio I got for $10 at Fry's. I bought 2!!! for $10??? Why not?
:)
2. That Volt Meter
is BOSCH. I found it at Advanced Auto Parts. I got some other one
at O'Reilly's and it appeared to be all plastic and cheaply made. The
Bosch one was solid and has real glass! All I did was sand the little
cover thing and paint with flat black. Then I took it out of its
housing. Drilled some holes in the gauge cluster enclosure (I made
ABSOLUTE certain I had it lined up! I only had 1 chance to get it right,
since I only have one cluster!) When I screwed it down, it kinda faced up
a little so I had to cut some triangle/wedge vacuum tubing to make it align
right in the cover. It's still not as perfect as I would like. Oh
yeah, and the needle's bottom actually hit the inside bottom of the enclosure,
so I had to slightly grind out a recess so the needle could move freely.
3. That Molotow
Liquid Chrome pen is straight up AWESOME!! I've tried a bunch of
different metallic silver pens with lackluster results. This pen is SO
shiny, you can dang near see your reflection in it! Don't fret at the
$10ish price tag at Hobby Lobby/Amazon/Wherever - you will not be disappointing
and will seek out everything you can use this thing on!!! I think my tip
size is 4mm and Hobby Lobby had it stocked in the models section, not the magic-marker
section.
4. I have to have a
cup holder! I drive my cars to work. I need somewhere to put my
coffee. This one was just some rubber insert I found in some car in some
junk yard. It serves its purpose although it's not purty!
After all that... I cannot attach pictures on this forum!!!!!! It seems to only allow http:// type links... Let me see what I can do there...

So how does one accrue points? And thus where do I see my balance?

Hey dlopeman! I took a look at the URLs in your image tags, and it looks like they're broken. In particular, the domain shows up as "drive.google", instead of "drive.google.com", so the address won't resolve. I tried adding the".com", and then the URL resolved. Unfortunately, the page gave an error saying that the file wasn't accessible.
If you search for "use Google drive image host", you'll find a few different articles on various ways to do that. All of the methods I saw looked like they were a little overly complicated, so you might also consider using a free image hosting site. I've used postimages.org a fair amount. No real reason; they just came up as a search result when I was looking for an image host. Haven't had any trouble using it so far, though.
