Hi from London,
We've been posting in the new members forum, but somebody suggested we should add a post here. We've prepared an AMC AMX for the Peking to Paris Rally later this year. We have a website with all the preparation to date and updates and tracking as the event gets nearer and happens. See the thread in introductions or slobber on the pictures at:

How many AMC's have ever been in China...???

Any...?

You could be a history-maker.

Good luck, and throw us a reminder as this draws near... some of us suffer from memory loss...!!! Tongue

The name Geen Remmen was given when the car was collected in the Netherlands with a big label on the steering wheel for the workshop staff, just sort of stuck.

Thanks to all for your continuing support. Updates on progress fairly often on www.p2pamx.com and we'll try to keep an event blog during the rally.

The organisers will be tracking the cars during the event and we should be able to have a link up to the cars location during the rally.

Many thanks,

Jim

Today we leave for Morocco and a longer test on the fringes of the Sahara. Fairly confident this will be the first AMC car to visit Africa, can anyone confirm this?

Could be the first AMX on African soil, but who knows ?
I have seen a few older AMC Jeeps and a Concord driving around in Morocco when I was travelling there.
Some Rambler Renault (Classic "CKD" kits assembled in Belgium) found their way into Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Egypt through Renault dealerships in the late sixties.
AMC's were assembled in Durban, South Africa. First Nash/Hudson in the fifties, later under Rambler nameplate during the sixties/seventies I think.
Probably not that many around anymore these days, but you can definately encounter AMC's and Ramblers on the African continent.

We would like to claim first AMC AMX to visit Africa.

Unless anyone has evidence to the contrary?

To get a close to accurate response, you might want to email one of the Classic Car Outlets in S. Africa, they would be "in the know".

Currently there are several AMC classic cars for sale in S.Africa: 1967 Rambler 770 Typhoon RHD, 1975 AMC Hornet 5DR, and a 1969 Javelin SST 343.

Maybe first 2 seater AMX, I know that the Secretary to the US Consulate in South Africa exported a 1971 Electric Blue AMX there, it was a 360, 4V, 4 SPEED, Go Pac Car, and when she retired in 1980's she brought it back and it ended up in the Baltimore Area, it lost oil pressure indication and she was having difficulty depressing the clutch and sold it in the Washington Post....never saw it again.

A naked effort to get this discussion back to the top...

Turns out according to chatter that the presenters of Wheeler Dealers are going to be on the Peking to Paris Rally in a 1916 Cadillac. Although they're not on the entry list so this may all be media hooey.

They present a long running show on buying improving and selling classics. I actually own one of the show cars, a Renault Alpine A310.
Which is a very lovely thing

Shows are great for petrol heads and women who fancy Ed China the mechanic. I think you can find programmes from the seven odd series on the net if you dig around and a new season starts in May, 2016

We're busy getting Visas and trying to get fit before the event start in 46 days time.

Well we got a finish at least, and we were fastest stage car by a country mile until we found a critical weakness in the front ball joints.

Nonetheless car regularly set top ten stage times even with us taking it easy.

Now needs a new owner to enjoy her. Advert at:

I tracked those guys online for about the first six days until the blog posts took so long to load on my computer.  I still have DSL, not a real high-speed line.   Very interesting though and the weak point for the AMX sure proved to be the front suspension.   Joe

Haven't been on here for a while, which is odd given the last couple of years, but was working flat out during Covid.
Some normality returning, after a big tidy up and respray underneath we're just doing a round of upgrades on Geen Remmen after a little slumbering with Royal Kustoms in the UK.  Car will be getting a more effective front end suspension and some changes to the clutch and cooling.  Ended up angle grinding off Mongolian mud from the exhausts...

Had a good response from an entry on the Firle Beacon hill climb earlier this year.

Hope you're all well,

Jim

P2P AMX,
I also haven't been on the forum in awhile, but I definitely dig the AMX.  I believe your build may have inspired Tim O'Neil to build a ARA stage AMX here in the US.  I am currently building a stage rally car out of a 79 Spirit (it's slow going).  I know it's late to respond but the first AMC in the Sahara was a early Eagle SX4 which ran in the Dakar rally (DNF).  It ran in 1981 and was piloted by Jean-Pierre Kurrer and Jean-Marie Chanteux.  It and the O'Neil AMX are picture below. I look forward to future updates on the AMX and would like to see it in an American rally if you ever decide to make the trek.

Hoping to catch up with Tim's car in October.  Geen Remmen is prepping again, having another go at the front suspension, heat factors, some driveline stuff and maybe we'll find where the water gets in even when it doesn't rain...
