G'day All,

My name is Wayne Williams and I'm compiling a register for Australian Rambler Hornets. The aim of the register is to capture as much info off the cars themselves and enhance our knowledge of AMI Hornet production history and give us an appreciation of how rare and unique these cars truly are.
I am also using this register to research  the differences in model years and production numbers.

Great idea Wayne Smile. Will give us an indication of how many are left and what happened to some of them. Some people may have recorded the numbers of one's that were crashed or wrecked out years ago etc. Maybe another column on the Hornet's present condition might be pretty cool too ie registered, not registered, under restoration, parts car, wrecked, MIA etc. Very interesting to look at the numbers you already have. Looking forward to meeting you at the 2nd annual AMC/Rambler show in a couple of weeks to talk Hornet's Smile

Loving the photo's of the Aussie Hornet's to accompany the register Smile I don't know how to do the photo's but mine "HO9-103" is on page 35 of Aussie AMC pictures thread in front of the 'Rambler' caravan. It should look a bit better by the time it get's to the 2nd annual show in a couple of weeks. I will line all the Hornet's up so Wayne can take a good pic of them seperatly and all together. I don't think we will beat the record of 23 Hornet's in the one spot in the early 80's but we will at least be half way there. If you know any other Hornet owners encourage them to drive or trailer it to the show and be part of the action and meet Wayne and other Hornet owners Smile.

Hi Hornet owners out there. I am looking at fitting up some doors to my Hornet to get the ball rolling but my front hinges are not real good. What do people do with their hinges when they are flogged out? Rebuild? How? or does some-one sell pins/bushes? Any info would be great Smile

In the listing it says it is H09-480 and has a 3.8L 6. Is this an original 232?

Hi Wayne. Yeah 3.8 would be 232. 258 would be 4.2 or 4.3. This would be another 10/70 looking at the numbers. Might be worth contacting him for more info and maybe leaving your details for the next owner. Another Hornet found Smile

If you are going to sand blast a car, you must get a primer on it in sufficient thickness to cover the profile, and within a short period of time, or flash rusting will occur just from moisture in the air.
The car advertised is now just junk if he has had it blasted, then left it outside, which it looks like he has. That will be a big ask to get that body back in shape.
It looks like a crap blasting job anyway, with some areas done and some not.

Yeah, it seems crazy to take all that time, and do all that work to dismantle the whole car and then just leave it outside like that.

If it is only surface rust then it is still easily saveable. It may look a lot worse then it really is. I wrecked out a Hornet in the early 90's that almost looked like this (I will get a pic up soon) but it literally had no actual rust other then the surface rust. I actually always wish I had of kept that shell as it was the straightest, most rust free I have seen but looked almost like the one for sale here on gumtree. As a side note the Hornet I wrecked out in the early 90's was a manual. It had everything (peddles, clutch, bellhousing etc) but no gearbox so I don't know what box was behind it. All the parts looked original. There was a Saginaw sitting inside the car when I first looked at it but he said it was for the HQ GTS that was sitting next to it covered in bird crap. The manual parts sold pretty quick and the shell went to some-one in Sydney who was going to turn it into a drag car. What was left of the paint showed it was a purple colour and apparently menaced Dubbo in its heyday. I bought it as a pair of Hornets from a barn near Oran Park raceway alongside a very original white Hornet (i wish I had of kept that too) I sold that one complete to a fella in Cherrybrook. It was near immaculate but no engine.
Anyhow if the one on gumtree only exhibits surface rust that hasn't eaten holes into the body then it may be a lot better then people think. Never judge a book by its cover Smile

Looking at George Fischer's green Hornet before and after shot is a case in point. The before shot shows a car that looks a bit ordinary and to some maybe not worth the hassle but wow look at the finished car. A real credit to George. If you are reading this George, job well done mate. Great looking car Smile

Yep the car has it's original engine its a 2 barrel 232 , which has the G , a 258 would have an A.

Was talking to some-one the other day who had been contacted by the owner of the Hornet that was made into a Mercedes in the 80's. The car still exists and is being ressurrected with the front being left as Mercedes but apparently the back is going back to Hornet. I am hoping to get the owners phone number so I can give them a call for a chat and updates. A unique Hornet that still lives

A 73 Hornet no less. I thought the rear lights was a good match, the front change is too much of a distraction.

Can see where this goes on the register but not game to mess with your list.
H39216,   AK13286, 12-73.
What looks to be the engine number I can see on the block is
    E
709 03
S432175
This doesn't seem to fit the pattern of the nearby cars on the register so not sure on that.
It is a 4.2L
Thought I would give this one a go cos I like my vehicles pretty much how they come from factory.

That odd "E" is part of the engine number, but funny how it doesn't end up inline with the other numbers. I've seen that before.
So it's 709E03 which decodes as
7 = 1974
09 = September
E = 232 1 barrel
03 = 3rd day of September

However, with a 12-73 build, it appears the engine has been changed.

Thanks for that.
Forgot to add before that this Hornet looks to have been Orange originally.
Dissapointed to find the engine is not the original.
It does however start easily and runs quite well.
Found a few things I need to do before the vehicle is roadworthy.

G'day,

Lovely car the best and tidiest I've seen for sale for a while
I spoke to Paul in Donnybrook about this car a while ago, its was on and off ebay. He just couldnt read the body number but said its like H39-216 but wasnt sure.

My car is H39-217 or one up also a 12-73 , and its still painted Big Bad Orange. Your paint was changed.

PM you email and I can email you the Register update.

Yes Engine was changed, My car  H39-217 12-73 AK13287 BIG Bad Orange , Buckskin Beige interior

Engine is 503'A'20 K5640H block casting is 3213867

I have a spare Engine like yours , I presumed it was from a jeep
but it came with 258 conrods , pistons are the same size, but has a different crank face , that  wont fit a BW35 torque converter, I thought it was a manual crank but maybe for the 904 torqueflite.
its date code is 708'E'08 an original  232 8th Aug 1974 engine, engine block  casting is 3218618 , the same as what is used on our 1975 Hornets. The engine has no serial number.

You may find you have a chrysler torqueflite transmission not a BW35,

A 74 engine will have a crank for a torqueflite for sure.

Thanks Dave.

I corrected my post above, The conrods are longer on a 258 than 232 conrods, but the deck height is same as 71 onwards 258. The crankshaft was stroked to make it a 258 , pistons are the same bore.

So you may have a 258 with the original BW35 if they only changed the block but reused the Rods and crankshaft.

Caused me some confusion. Here's a pic.
74 "E" 232 block, starter is on the right hand side.
But looks like Borg Warner transmission.
Also has extractors and two barrel carby.

Hello,  This is September's update.

Thanks to Darren in Victoria for giving the details of his early 1972 Hornet, H29-289. Again this shows that 1972 Body numbers start at H29-28X rather than H29-001 like all other Hornets.

This (H29-289) must be this first or second or third 1972 Hornet made.

H19-286 is a 1971 Hornet made  12-71 and also a Mocca brown.

H?9-287 and H?9-288 are whereabouts unknown  so I don’t if they are 1971 or 1972.

The key differences I know of between 1971 and 1972 cars are the seat headrests in 1972, The 4.2 Litre badge on the C Pillar. Also the Compliance plate has Rambler Hornet 1971 Sedan , while 72 have AMC Hornet Sedan.

But generally they are hard to pick apart.

Also we have our first Documented Canary Yellow Car, H29-430 .

Had a chat with the guy who does these and they are looking at doing as many of the AMI colours as possible. So if you want a new reproduction paint label for your AMI assembled Hornet (or any Rambler) these are the go. And are a great price
Gary is his name and was a great bloke to talk to and can be reached on mailto:sales@toyotaheritage.com" rel="nofollow - sales@toyotaheritage.com

He is also interested in any AMI colour charts, pics of cars with these colours, and parts that were interchangeable from Toyota/Triumph/Rambler etc
A great little finishing touch to that restoration of your Hornet

Have had the engine out. Took the sump off to straighten some dents.
Measured the throw of the crank, and the length of a con rod.
Also found we had 12 balance weights.
With Waynes help found a number stamped on one of those balance weights.
3214723. All good for a 258 crank.
Seems we have a different block,3218618 ( Newer 232 block )
different head, 3214723 ( hydraulic lifters )
different intake, 3213809
All good though. Pleased to learn it is a 258. Runs well and we got it fully registered on road a couple of days ago.

Also found out this Hornet was last registered in late 2002 early 2003 in WA. KFM507. Would like to find out more about it if thats familiar to anyone.

For Hornet owners interest Gary Hunt who has been making some AMI decals (original paint decals, tin body plates etc) for our cars is looking at doing the 70/71 Hornet rear lenses in the not too distant future (for Australian and US market) as well as the AMI guard badges inserts which will be great for our Aussie built Ramblers.

To show some interest and ask any questions don't hesitate to contact him through his website;

www.toyotaheritage.com

or phone him on 0416645334

He has been making rare Toyota lenses and parts (with great success and quality) and is focusing on the many unique AMI parts. His interest in AMC's and the Hornet lenses stems from this. Feel free to contact him and register your interest in the lenses and AMI badges and ask about any other parts he may have, or have in the pipeline for our cars. Great to see this sort of stuff happening now

Gary has also indicated he may be able to reproduce other near unobtainable (in good condition anyhow) parts for Hornets down the track, subject to interest, cost etc of course, are;

Australian AMI RHD gauge fascia's that are always broken.

Fuel tank filler plastic cover. These are always deeply scratched and damaged and broken. I think only 70/71 had these?.

Australian Hornet Dome light. Ours Hornets received US Javelin spec dome lights which are very hard to find NOS and sought after by Javelin owners in US as well.

Chrome pistol grip button. These are always losing their chrome. These wernt on US hornets. Does anybody know what they were off in the US?

A long way down the track he may be able to do the ultra rare to find dashpads. These are ALWAYS buckled and broken. These also suit US Hornets and Gremlins so he a good market there. He is in the process of doing a Toyota one that is similar.

Feel free to contact him and put items into the pipeline. Some, or maybe even none of these, may happen BUT it is a good feeling to know that there is a possibility of them being reproduced after so many years of being out of production

Of course it ALL depends on YOU. AMI Hornet, and all other Australian and US based AMC owners showing some interest in what Gary is capable of.

I don't think too many chances will come by for some of these items to be remade again down the track. Lets make the most of it

Happy AMC'ing

Hi All,

Just updating the total production estimate found in the top of this thread to 1769,  as H09-864 a June 1971 , 1970 Hornet was added yesterday! This increase the 1970 Total from 831 to 864. So 1970 production ran to June 71 and 1971 production started in July 1971. Sill looking for a 9-70 Hornet!
There is scope for this figure still to increase if we find 9-72 1972s(US model 1971) or any 1974s(US model 1972s)

Retro Auto magazine that is one of the better magazines around these days (this one on-line only) has an article on the Hornet's featuring one of the nicest original Australian assembled Hornets left in Australia. This car will be at next years show again for everyone to have a look at.

https://www.shannons.com.au/club/news/retroautos-october-2017-exclusive-ford-ltd-prototypes-plus-67-valiant-v870horne/

and click "View Magazine"

David will be doing a few AMC's over the course of the next 18months

If possible leave some comments about the article and Hornets and AMC's in general. The more people that do the more they will see the interest in AMC's. It will only take you a minute to do and Shannons use comments to gauge what they will keep doing or avoid. lets show them AMC's really are an important part of the Australian landscape Smile

The reproduction of early Hornet tail light lenses is progressing as we speak. These havnt been produced for over 30 years since the mid 80's when AMC US done their last batch of these sought after lenses. Going by the quality of the other AMI items Gary has produced these will be a beaut addition to our broken, missing, scratched , faded and tatty one's we near all have now on our Hornet's and will be popular both here in Australia and the US. Will be good to have a spare on the shelf for a rainy day too

While they are still a few months off Gary can be contacted on 0416645334 or visit www.toyotaheritage.com and pop him an email to secure yourself a set

He is also reproducing the Australian only AMI front guard and rear 1/4 badges soon. Be sure to secure you pair of these sought after items. I have never seen a perfect one on a car nor any NOS one's so looking forward to getting a pair of these

A local Albury fella has this Hornet for sale if anyone is interested. Looks like a good project and is better starting project then it looks in my photo's. And comes with spare parts and panels etc. He doesn't want too much for it, I think around the $3000 mark which is pretty good these days for a solid starter Hornet. PM me if interested and i can pass on his details

Hi, after finding this thread, I realize this is the hornet I purchased late 2019. It's pretty much as pictured at the moment, but without the rear glass and has 20" rear and 18" front rims. Some panels have also been swapped (probably from the spares referred to in the ad). Was originally big bad orange under the red re-coat. I was told that the cross-member has been modded to suit a ford drivetrain and the mounts seem to support this. Hopefully will get more time to dig deeper in coming weeks and will post info regarding body number when I get the chance - keen to ensure it is on the register.

I saw that car in person and looked to be a nice restorer.

The car was set up for a Ford Windsor

If the dash pad is still in it I loved how they recoevered it. The best I have seen and would love to know where it was done

On saying that I shouldve asked the son of the guy who built that car originally back in early 80's from memory. The son was thinking of buying it back for his dad but it didnt eventuate for whatever reason. If I find the guys details somewhere I will pass them on as you may be able to ask him some questions

And the Aussie ones are at least 50 years old this month. July 1970 was when they started putting them together down at Australian Motor Industries (AMI) in Melbourne for a September release date which was put to October as far as I know

Enjoy your Hornet mate. They are fun cars to have Smile

G'Day Wayne,
I can confirm that the 1970 H09-873 is still on the road in Victoria.

Let me know if you would like any further info.
Cheers,
Chris

Thanks Chris.

Your Hornet is still the newest 1970 I know about in 6-71. The 71's followed the next month/
#873 is the highest 70 body number so far.
