I was wondering if anybody knows how to terminate the correct non adhesive vinyl tape on wiring harnesses? The end or termination is tricky so that the tape does not unravel. Looking for the correct way (like the factory did it). Thanks in advance. Rich C.

Thanks Andy.... I looked on Youtube and could not quite find what I was looking for,but did see a couple examples that alluded to what you show here. Oddly enough,it's for an S/C Rambler Tach wiring harness. Thank you for the information! Rich C.

Interesting question rich. The harness on my gremlin is exactly like Andy's- and I retained that detail in the restoration. I also lost a point for "loose wiring harness tape" in judging in Charleston. ------------- AMO Newsletter Editor |

This is great factual information guys. I thought when I was posing this question that I wouldn't get a response. No knock on the forum,just thought it was a little obscure,especially for a Sunday night. Lots of good back up on this one. Thanks guys! If possible,maybe some others could post a couple pictures too,and this could be saved as as sticky. Really never occurred to me until I needed to do it today. Rich C.

He's right on the money, spot-on with that. Exactly. I've salvaged parts from several, repaired many dozens, and made a few "sub-harnesses" and that's how it is - and as long as the wrap is supple, still slightly "sticky" (NOT as in glue or adhesive, but meaning it tends to stick to itself when pulled across itself) and CLEAN, the knot stays. With age, heating and cooling, dirt, etc. then the thing can slip apart. The wrap was pretty tightly wound and when that end was pulled through, they had to pull fairly hard to get it to pass through the loop. Once they let go, it was going to stay put as there was some tension and the clean surfaces didn't slide on each other easily. AMO docking for that - it really figures, really does. The Camaro or 'stang people would have given you a point and kudos. What the bloody heck does AMO expect? Sticky electrical tape or tie-wraps? Give me a break...... have they never even seen an original harness before? Probably not, honestly. (But you could always get the point back by putting a badge on your grill, so no biggy?!?) Granted, the free ends aren't always quite that long, some are fairly short, but that's a very good example of "correct". I've taken enough of them apart to salvage parts over the years to recognize a correct harness wrap termination. (by the way, over the years AMC bought the harnesses from more than one supplier - in later years it was Coleman, I've got other names written down at home from the various harnesses I've worked on or salvaged parts from. On that example - blue to oil sender, red to alternator output, orange to alternator "reg" terminal, black to ground, green to brushes/field. the colors aren't badly faded, still reasonably "rich" looking. Hi Looking at your photo showing the insulation tie off etc, i'm asking if that photo is from inside the engine bay .Do you remember where that blue wire went to .as Iv got a blue wire with a spade connector HANGING ABOUT INSIDE MY ENGINE BAY and I don't know where it came from .Thank you ....
WEIRD OR WHAT i ASKED A QUESTION YESTERDAY ABOUT WHERE THE GREEN BLACK ORANGE WIRES GO FROM THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR ALSO TODAY ABOUT A BLUE WIRE ..AND BINGO YOU SEEM TO HAVE ANSWERED THE QUESTION WITHOUT KNOWING IT..HOWEVER ITS THE IDENTIFICATION OF THE NAMED PARTS OF THE ALTERNATOR THAT STOPS ME CONNECTING THE WIRES. I DON'T KNOW WHERE THE GROUND CONNECTION IS OR THE FIELD TERMINAL WOULD YOU MIND DRAWING A PICTURE AND SHOWING WHERE THE DIFFERENT COLOURED WIRES GO WITH SIMPLE ARROWS AS I'M A DUNCE... THANK YOU .
