I'm doing some further detailing of 401jim's Plain Vanilla 1970 Hornet. Someone had repainted the entire rear axle flat black, brake lines and all, but when I removed the U-bolts I found original looking black paint underneath.

The shock mounts also appear to have been painted black, unless it has transferred from the spring perch.

Knowing that the 1970 Javelin and AMX axles were not painted it's surprising to see that they were on a basic Hornet. Can anyone confirm if the SC/360 rear axles were painted as well?

My 12/70 SC360 did not have a painted axle, but it was a model 20 as well. It has the red center section and natural tubes. My 10/70gremlin was the same way.

So maybe the 10-bolt axles were still being painted into early 1970?

Could be. That also has he 70 style spring perches, so there were some changes made for the 71 model year.

Here you can see that the holes for the vent and brake tee were taped over prior to paint.

The cover still has the ID tag attached. I'm guessing it was not painted over originally?

my cover tag wasn't painted - IIRC it has the fractional rear end gear ratio.
