A few more build pics..powerglide to amc adapter, etc...
The last things to do are a taillight panel and simulate an amx grille with paint...and scale it..

Thank You! here are some pics of the engine from a previous car I ran the Springfield mile in. I transplanted it to this car...I have a spare engine almost identical to this I will assemble with a slightly revised oil pan.
With an 8896 Holley this engine went a 6.23 110 (1/8 mile)in my Spirit @2950# coincidently to run with the vintage circle track guys I have to weigh atleast 2950..now it has a 4779 holley..
I run chevy pulleys, the stock upper is redrilled for amc, I run a flat lower with a homemade spacer for alignment. Chevy C.T. p/s pump and bracket modified for amc, Stickshifter made the swinging pick-up, Home ported heads (308 cfm peak)2.08-1.71 valves, comp 300b flat tappet cam, crower lifters,H.S. 1.7 shaft rockers offset intake,BRC flat top pistons(11-1) 6" eagle rods, RO-DY crank, homemade pan, homemade headers 1-3/4-1-7/8 with edelbrock merge collectors,Torker modified for a 4500 with 4150 bolt pattern currently with a 750..
JEEP bellhousing modified for bert trans, chromoly support struts.

baffling isn't it? it keeps oil from running out of the sump box..only allows oil into it for the most part...

Trap doors.   They let oil move towards the pickup, but under high cornering load they keep oil from running to the outside of the pan with centrifugal force.   Helps keep the oil pickup covered in the corners when using a wet sump setup.

I picked up some vintage parts last weekend the were used in cicle track racing in the 70's...Traco heads and blocks, reed heads and some interesting heads that had a lot of work but don't look like they would perform very well..

These are a set of heads that had a lot of weld work to the bowl and had the heat riser port welded...Intake ports are tiny(compared to the traco/reed) and I don't think they will make any power but I am curious and will flow them soon

1st time with this group and my car...I just took it easy...started in the rear of the heat and passed a couple cars..could have passed more but Doc Hudson was in the way and all over the place...start behind him again in feature 2nd row when we started the race I moved up and opened a lane and let the fast guys to go through and deal with Doc...then a few laps later I went to pass him and clipped the big balloon tire on the inside corners with my left front tire and messed up my steering linkage so I took it back to the pits...
Next race is in June at Farmer City another local track...have to change gear for that track it is 1/3 mile
The engine ran great better than I expected..plenty of power with the new smaller tube step headers I built with merge collectors...The car itself handled very good also...but had some bouncing coming out of the corners....My set-up guy thought my shocks on the rear are at too much of an angle. He introduced my to a shock man there and he confirmed that anything over a 15 deg angle they become inaffective...might have well taken them off...so I am going to get with him soon and he is going to spec me out a shock package and I will be changing the mounting of them...he agreed to help since I wont be racing against him...as he is the top car in his class...

More seat time for sure...I'm still a drag racer at heart and always will be(more to come soon)..but I raced on a dirt track before I ever made it to a dragstrip back in my teens..in an AMC even....and I wanted to give it a shot before im too old....it was now or never...I proved to myself I can still do it...So back to the straight tracks soon...

Jim, why in the world do you wear gloves to paint but you drive a race car without fire resistant gloves? Here in Pa. you wouldn't do wheel pack without full safety gear. Thanks for sharing the pics and video, but, I don't want to see you without gloves again! One 'quick' flare-up of fire and those working hands become painfull charred meat! I've seen it TOO often....

I assume you are loading the T/O with the tabs folded under each other under a post so only one tab is out?
Another trick to tearoffs is, use .003 non laminated t/os and when you need fresh , put thumb and for finger across the sheild (from eye to eye) and pinch together with pressure to the shield one tear-off should tear right off a post.
I've seen some guys put a small tab of duct tape on each T/O. giving more body to feel.

3 part feature..camera womans phone died...not quite the whole 20 laps..I sucked and car loose...I over drove the car twice...2nd time caused a guy to hit my drivers door and it knocked my #3 plug wire off reflected in part 3 video...I think I finished 7th..If at times I fell back...that's when I couldn't see and was trying to fix that...then after the plug wire came off at the end I was debating whether to pull in or not? I stayed out and tried to pick the pace back up but not on 7 cyl...

Always learning....1st race I was overly cautious and found when running the bottom don't try and hug those big azz tires they shove out there...2nd race I was less cautious...misread the track before the feature because we could have made a change on the car to tighten it(and was prepared to and didn't)....And when you get a new go pro...don't decide to leave your gloves in the truck

I ran my last race of the year with the vintage guys at Peoria Speedway. I started in the back and ended up 3rd in the heat. Started on the pole for feature...I would have done much better starting on the top  I held on for a few laps till the muscle came through...With all the yellows it ended up heating up the temp guage and didn't want to go back down under power so I ended up pulling in on the next yellow...not worth it for 100 bux...I MAY try and run macon speedway in a week or 2 with the sportsman if I can borrow a gear. But most likely done for the year...I'm already lookin at my Gremlin.

I'm happy to report that 2 Landis engines won track championships this year at Macon Speedway. Sportsman of Nick Macklin and Street Stock of Bobby Beiler! Great job by them!

I'm set up for dirt but even with just a tire change I think it will haul.
I've thought about building an asphalt car but Rockford is the closest track and that's almost 3 hours 1 way so its not really worth it. But I may try it once and I'll let you all know!

Charleston was rained out...
Loaded up today and hauled to the mighty Macon Speedway. The first non vintage event for the Javelin. I ran the sportsman class. Its a 10" tire, 3 link chassis, iron head unlimited engine class. Fast cars. I did ok for my first time back there to race in over 25 years.
Started 2nd in the heat finished 3rd.
Started 6th in the feature and finished 5th.
I should be able to post video in a few days.

I'm gonna go back later in the year with a 6.83 and I think I can do a lot better even being out chassis'd.Mudboss video

Video of last 2 laps here. We raced our 1st Vintage race of the year at Fairbury Speedway. Won the heat starting 4th. The first 6 laps were with some unnecessary contact. I found a cut fuel line after the race because of guys turning right instead of left. I was a strong bet to win the feature but I didn't trust my Mgyver repair, ran a few laps and loaded it up for another day.

Farmer City Vintage race. Video of the full show.
I finished 3rd in the heat and feature.
I would have won the feature but at about lap 11 I developed a misfire. It ended up being #5 plug wire came off the plug. But it was enough to distract me from driving, between watching the oil gauge and wondering if I should pull off. I screwed up and ended up 3rd. Even with the misfire I could have held 2nd easily but I just didn't pay attention the driving.
In Street Stock another Landis engine of #16 Nick Macklin won his heat and finished 4th in the feature

Here is another from the last race with the vintage cars. Started in the back and made it up to 2nd and a plug wire came off about lap 10. Spent the last 5 laps trying to see if it was gonna blow up or not instead of paying attention to driving.

Back in the day... being at San Jose speedway and Chico fairgrounds, never saw an AMC on the dirt track. It just seems odd in a good way, until you notice the dents from all the bashing.

The only time I saw any bashing was in figure 8 racing. Most of the time, they are fair unless they come down to final laps and are neck and neck. Using the outside car as an extra set of wheels was not thought of a sportsman like. At least to me.

I'm going to run a race or 2 next year with the gateway vintage racers. They don't tolerate any beating, but they did recently have a bad crash that took out the whole field with the exception of the last place guy. There is a video on you tube of it.
The Illinois Vintage guys are 10 cars owned by the same guy and he has all his buddies drive. Some don't appear to have ever driven before. The promoter had a drivers meeting before this last video I posted about driving and beating their way to the front. Even went as far as saying if you need a checkered flag picture he carries one in his truck and he will get you a photo after the race, To save beating the cars up. And he then goes out in the #58 65 chevelle you see in the last video and beats his way to the front. Ya'll can come to your own conclusion on his driving but I still stand by my comments to him. And I have zero interest to continue racing with them. Too bad cause it was a lot of fun when the previous promoter ran the series.

I built this engine in 2012. I put around 40 or so wide open throttle miles on it at the Springfield mile race, and 3 more seasons in the Javelin Dirt car on short tracks. I pulled it out this last weekend for a freshen. #4 main and #6 rod bearings look new. And the copper line feeding #6 rod was still if fine shape.
I had been warned by many that you cant make a wet sump 401 live on a circle track. I found a way....

I think that was a point you brought up a year or so ago about 401 crank oiling mods. At the time I came off unexpectedly, with my reasons not to go wild with an external line and cross drilling. Even though I did not credit your way of correcting oiling issues, my concern was the oiling on #6 between 390 and 401... and your mod seems to be the best for clearances and ease in locating the passages without a line on top.

The block I have has a top line mod, which may have been done improperly by its past owner, as the fitting hole does not have a lot of meat to seal with. Hole may be too big in general, but none the less my plans are to seal it shut and re drill the gallery. If anything a leak on top is more harmful than one going into the pan and pickup. Not that I expect lines to leak or fail, just never sat well in my mind to want a line mod on top.

I couldn't be any happier with the condition of this engine. I re-used the main bearings but did order new rod bearing(but will save the old ones lol)
Along with the rebuild I am converting the car to be 100% legal for Street Stock. That requires a circle track powerglide instead of the bert trans I have been running. A 2bbl holley(I plan to mount it sideways and use my drag float and jet extensions), the correct compound tires( I have been running a d compound tire but only A's are allowed now).
And finally rules say I have to run an hei distributor. So I machined a chevy housing to fit into the amc pcv hole. I am also going to put a valve cover breather inside the cap. Now when they want to check for a roller cam I will be able to pull my hei out so they can see the flat tappets. Like all the chevy guys do...
The rules don't say the distributor has to function...yet

Engine is together and I am converting to the powerglide trans. It should be a performance advantage on starts with a usable low gear for a wot take off.

Well...I never thought about 8 plugs. I was gonna run wires up under the cover I make in front...Maybe I should mount 8 more plugs somewhere
I could drill 8 hole into the flexplate shield and mount plugs there

Here are some pics from last winter.Body repair cause the vintage guys cant drive. And I had changed the trans over to a glide,2bbl and an HEI to be legal for street stock. but after finishing it all I decided to put the 4bbl and bert trans back and run with Sportsman.

I had the 2bbl mounted sideways and used a drag float with jet extensions. I cut up and used a 6cyl. amc carb linkage for a linkage bellcrank and fabbed the rest.
