How many of these things were made in 73? Seems everyone has one on here. LOL! Well I cant Crypost pics quite yet but almost there. So I decided to get this thing started anyways. I have  started the teardown and stripped the paint from the roof, quarters, rockers and hatch then sprayed them with Nason Epoxy Sealer. Found small patches welded in the rear quarters that will need addressing soon. It was a black with black interior and black vynile top. Previous owner removed the top and painted it BBB. It has power steering and brakes along with disc brakes. Power is supplied by a 6 cyl. and 904 tranny. I have taken many pics as I progress and will share costs and part numbers as I go. 14 more posts till I can post them. Sorry.

If it was originally black on black (door tag should tell you) then I'm pretty sure that was a special order as I don't believe black was a standard color on the '73 Hornet. According the "Standard Catalog of American Cars 1946-1975" AMC produced 40,110 Hornet hatchbacks in '73. Good luck with your project.

AMC sold quite a few of them.   I had a teacher who bought one. It was yellow, and I remember she was so proud of it because it was her first new car. She took the class out to look at it.

Sounds like a great project! If you have photos on a host site like Photobucket, put the link here. We'll be eager to follow along. The '73 Hatchback was a very well received product by the automotive press and the general public. It made a couple of magazine covers back in the day.

Triple black would have been quite rare indeed!

These are really nice cars. Beautiful lines, perfect proportions and tasteful application of trim. I had a 73 Hatchback X that I special ordered in the spring of 73. It was dark brown, black vinyl roof with the 360 and automatic. Fully loaded up, factory air, all the toys. I sold it in the fall of 73 to a fellow in South Jersey. Lost track of it about 2 years later. I'd be curious if it's still around. probably not, but with all the options and the 360 it may have had a chance of someone holding on to it.

They're a nice proportioned car and they drive well.   Same suspension as the Javelin, same motors, but 300 lbs. lighter.

Im the first person to completely take it apart and the factory black paint is everywhere. When I str
ipped the roof you can see the old areas where the spot welded studs were for the top trim. If I list the numbers can someone decode them for me?

Thanks guys for all your comments and info. I had planned on installing a narrowed 8 3/4 and 15x12 rims with 29x15.5-15 tires. But maybe its worth restoring. I have the orignal motor and tranny and they still work great. What you guys think? Also the way the vynle top was put on is like nothing I have seen before. Anybody have pics of what it should look like?

I have also noticed that all the 74s I have seen have a flat tail panel with the hidden gas filler behind the license plate. My title matches all the numbers on my car and it states its a 73. But mine has the same body as a 74.

Also the vynile top had a trim pattern that I havent seen on another one. I have circled the trim stud locations and drew a line to conect them so you have an idea what it looked like. Im working to get the pics up.

Has anyone ran into any of this before.

The late '73 Hornet (and Gremlins) got the '74 style bumpers and grilles.  Filler neck moved under the license plate at the same time. Sorry, couldn't tell you exact date the change was made.

Just scored a set of wheels. 2 15x4 and 2 15x10 with a 5,5 inch offset. Tried one on the stock rear end for the heck of it. Its half an inch from the springs an 1 inch from the fender lip. If the car isnt very rare I plan on tubbing it and putting on 29x15.5-15 tires on. If not I will go the restore route.

$275.00 for wheels and $20.0 for gas.

I would like to try and help on your paint question, but in 1973 or 1974 I can't find any reference to G7 Paint Color.  Factory Black cars all would be 1A or P1 depending on year.  The "Model" line in your door tag indicates 1974 and the body numer is a late year car.  Are you sure the door hasn't been changed???  P! Classic Black was a Special Order color and available on Hornet.....your door tag "appears to be changed, either by itself or attached to a door.

Could have been a black car it was removed from then put on mine(DOOR). The car definetly is all black from the factory.

If your line on the roof is where vinyl top trim was, then it was done in some aftermarket shop. A Hornet hatchback factory vinyl roof would have stainless trim at the bottom of the vinyl, just below the rear window and around the 'edge' of the quarter to each quarter window (and a little piece at each front pillar bottom.)

Joe made a nice offer to help you with correct bumpers. I have to say that the Concord ones look better on there than I thought they would. Between front and rear, they weigh about 75# less than the heavy steel '74 ones would!

I'm curious too, how your VIN# and title match up. Under the hood, the engine is definitely '75-'77 and not '74. Some other things under there don't seem correct for '74 either. Good luck! Keep asking questions and we'll help you sort things out.

Paul

Anyone else bothered by his 4 door trim tag? Whether the door has been replaced or not there seems something amiss here. Could you post the first 8 digits of the VIN?

After alot of detective work and a call to the last 2 owners this is what I have. The car was purchased 6 yrs ago as you see it from a guy who buys cars down south and brings the north and sells them. The door was replaced sometime in the past along with a red front fender and a silver hatch. The vin on the title does match the one on the dash and all the numbers I can find on the car. Door tag is long gone but luckily here the dash vin and body vin locations must match title. But would have been nice to have.
As you can see I need to organize my shop so thats todays goal. Then the battle goes on.

Here are the first 8 digits of the vin: A3AO37A3. And on title says: YEAR 73, MAKE AMER, BODY Tudor.

You've got one crazy mixed up car there. VIN and title says it's a '73. Tail panel says it's a '74. Grille is a late '74 to '75. And you've got a door tag off a 4 door sedan on a 2 door hatchback. Model # (IF it's really a '73) on the door tag should be 7303-7.

It's unusual to see someone go to the extent of painting the engine bay. especially when it would have been very simple to tape off an already black bay!

To me I'd guess it was someones project car that got built the way they wanted it and passed along when they didn't want or need it any longer.

I didn't notice anywhere in the thread, did you check behind the steering box to see if numbers match the dash?

I get that!

The bumpers & tail panel I understand, could be late '73 production, but I'm confused/concerned by the Prestolite ignition. Wouldn't think it would be that late '73

Yep seems to be right. But Im pulling the box tonight. I to know it was a project. Its going black again but I wish I could fiqure out the vin thing and the vynile top thing. Were there any dealerships offering this type of option? Looks alot better than the stock normaly seen top treatment. Would be too hard to duplicate now because of the way an idiot removed the pins but could be taped off to make a 2 tone paint job.

Things are starting to make sense. A silver hatch would indicate a possible rear end collision. It's very possible that the tail panel and perhaps more were also changed from a later model. Especially since the bumpers were changed as well.

No matter, get it together as you see fit and make the best of it. Maybe you can get a "HEINZ", "MONGREL" or "MUTT73" license plate which would inspire conversation !

HAHA! That would be great. Well I guess I wont restore the car then. I have a narrowed 8 3/4 and 15x10 wheels for it. I still need 29x15.5-15 tires then I can start on that mod. It has moser axles and spool with 35 spline axles and 5/8 screw in studs.

To have a 4 door door tag, someone would have had to have swapped that tag into a 2 door-door since they are longer. Why would anyone bother swapping the wrong tag? Also, is it attached with proper rosette rivets? Strange indeed.

Tag mystery-PO had taken the tags off of two cars and put them away. When removed from their storage, the PO couldn't remember which one was the correct one so they guessed and installed the wrong one.

I seem to recall that someone on the site repops these.

Got a few more things done today. Took the hatch off to have more room to start the rear suspension modifications. Got the car up in the air on jack stands. I also modified the tranny mount so the motor and tranny would sit a little further ahead for distributor  clearance. Ended up moving it a whole inch. Also got some early christmas presents for the big brown truck. Got my stud welder, extra studs, panel clip pliers, and filler spreaders. All from harbor freight.I had this stuff till I borrowed them to a friend and then he did a midnight move out and took everything with him!Angry Hopefully will have my rear frame metal by this weekend. Here are some pics and price breakdown.

4pcs kit appl. $8.99
Panel Pliers   $7.99

I believe there's a black '77 Hornet hatchback on Craigslist right now. Has one of those dang SBC's in it though. Do a search of AMC's in North Jersey. The car is actually in Berwick, PA

$6000.00! What?! At least put a chrysler motor in it if you dont want or have an AMC motor. Amc used more chrysler tranies than anything else and they were acquired by mopar. At all our mopar shows and meets around here we encorage and except all AMC cars with open arms! But to each their own I guess. Im the first one to say biuld the car for you not everyone else. Its your vision and dream.

Also found out my car was being used as a chipmunk feeder.Shocked. How do those little guys get in there? Now in the morning time to put tools away and spend quality time with the shop vac. I wanted to remove the carpet too but I broke 2 snap on torx sockets trying to get them out.Angry. Oh well enjoy the pics. Oh Ya! I ordered my Jegs ladderbars and Checkered Racing rear coilover kit today.

I should have my ladder bars in the morning. I also ordered a hoodscoop and should be here this week too. Got the rear floor cut out and the rear and slid under it. Then had to put the rims on. Rims not bolted on.

I was hoping that the ladderbars would line up with the holes in the brackets on the rearend. But no luck. I will have to remove the mounts and use the new ones. Some assembly required.LOL

Got all the tinwork done, seamsealed, and coated. Also completed the frame connectors and floor pan patches. Today it was 73 degrees so we pushed it out and sandblasted the engine compartment and fenderwells. I will try to get pics up again.

Thanks everyone! I started putting the interior back in today. Still needs a good vaccuming. Also started widening the rear trunk peices. I will hide the stereo amp under the drivers side and the battery under the passenger side. In the center I will biuld a box and also carpet it to cover the fuel cell. The areas in front of the wheelwells will also get boxed in and carpeted for speakers and more storage.

Well heres the part that will most likely stir up some bad vibes. I was going to install a mopar 360 since I cant find or afford a 401. So I was thinking if mopar still had amc in operation today they would have installed a hemi in a hornet just like they did with the jeeps. So here is the start of the 06 dodge 5.7L hemi with a 727 tranny.

Yes!   About time someone did one of those.   I've been thinking about hemi power for a Javelin for a couple years now.   Just like the LS Chevy stuff, they move air and make tons of power.
