I have a disc brake power booster on the white Javelin. I got it from APD several years ago. I believe it to be an A1 Cardone rebuild. They did a great job rebuilding the "mechanical" portion of the booster, but after a few years of light duty use, the exterior began to look kinda crappy. So I took it off, and removed the boots and pushrods and whatever else was in the way of a pretty paint job application. When I pulled the boot off of the back of the booster this yellowish foam stuff fell out and pretty much turned to bantha fodder on me. What to do? Well I searched around and emailed cardone, they responded by saying they wouldn't help. Probably thought they were too big for their britches and why should they help a little guy like me what's in it for them you know kinda deals. So I put that part on the back burner and I painted it a real pretty gloss black like I wanted. Two coats of epoxy primer wet sanded in between and two coats of gloss black catalyzed urethane, wet sanded after the first coat. So back to the yellowish sponge. I called Scott with "Brake Materials and Parts" in Fort Wayne Indiana. He rebuilds boosters and all sorts of things with brakes and stuff. I explained my predicament to him and he prompltly replied that piece of sponge is the air filter at the back of the booster. He made it sound important. It must filter in-coming air that moves about when the diaphragm moves.  He also had no problem helping me find a solution. He's sending me a new one, made of more durable material via UPS. So this is really a good guy alert. If you need help with things that this guy does call him, he'll help you.  Here's his website   http://brakematerialsandparts.webs.com/" rel="nofollow - http://brakematerialsandparts.webs.com/

Here's his phone number 260-426-3331

Cardone may be well known, but their customer service SUCKS. Their official way of business is to NOT talk to the customer. They want the customer to talk to the retailer and the retailer talk to them!

I bought a Cardone throttle body off of Amazon. I had to call Cardone three times and beg Amazon until they replaced the throttle body! Amazon replaced it; I don't know if they ever got anything from Cardone or not.

If I have choices and Cardone is one, I Cardon't...

When I worked at NAPA and had to call them, unless I got my buddy on the line (who got tired of them and left), I got the run around. I explained that a reman master cyl for disc brakes had the pressure retention valve in the wrong port, causing the brakes to stay engaged in front and leak in the back and they were like "I suppose you're a brake engineer?". Nope, I'm a former mechanic of 30 years who quit due to bad back and injuries. I finally just pulled it apart, switched the valves and springs, then re-installed it. (lost the photos when my old computer crashed)

Gouge is a military slang term roughly equivalent to cliff notes -- sort of like getting the short answers to the test questions...

Armand,

Just asked him about prices to have the brake system rebuilt; hope to have it done in the 6 to 8  months.  Working to get the body repaired and painted right now.  My goal is to have the Ole Girl restored by December 2019.Smile

Bumping this old post to see if others have used Brake Materials and Parts in Fort Wayne, for restoring original brake booster?  I know Boosters by Dewey is used by many but this place is closer to me and have read good things as well.

Thanks!

There is a slight whistle in mine on cold startup. No performance issues.
Inquired about getting it rebuilt and there is only one shop within an hour of me that would do it for $375 CA.
He stated that there is a bushing in these that is unique, currently unobtanium and he only has a half dozen left - so if I want it done, it should be sooner rather then later.
Replaced the check valve and grommet so that's not the source of the whistle.
$375 for an annoying whistle is a bit much, but $375 if the booster fails is very reasonable, how long to wait dilemma! Likely going to do it this February or March.
Parts are definitely getting scarcer!

It's common for them to get hairline cracks on the back of the booster due to vibrations.  You might check that first before you send it off.  You'll probably have to remove it from the car to inspect unless the cracks are huge.

too bad you couldn't get your booster restored.  I found a company that took it apart and sent the booster covers back (they are two pieces) and I had them powder coated.  I worried that when he reassembled the two half's it would get scratched up.  Nope, looked perfect.  You could tell some minor scratching where the two pieces come together, but you really need to look.  Car has been running with it for 12 years and no problems and the powder coat black is as good as day one.  Kind of a late story, just thought someone else would like to know. O, and they also restored the reservoir. Same process.

If there are cracks, I'll be taking the booster apart myself and TIG welding those and maybe install some reinforcement on the inside if possible.
Then we will see about any restoration.
Curious about this unobtanium bushing also. If there is a bushing that is the problem, can likely make one of those myself.
Have not seen a rebuild kit that includes the diaphragms for sale. I'm assuming the rebuilders have a cross reference for Bendix parts.

Found the number for the rebuild kit MP500828, 8-3/4" dual diaphragm Bendix booster. But not found anyone with stock.

AMCers
I purchased a Brake booster kit some years ago from Classic Industries.
For my SC Rambler when I put car in Storage in 1979 brakes worked fine. But that was a long time ago.
Here is the part number 62-463 9" Bendix Single Diaphragm Repair Kit.
Not sure how I determined on this Kit.
I have not got around to using the Kit or taking mine apart to look at.
Did not want to put mine back in just to see it not work then to take it back out.
Just wanted to have ready when I am able to take mine apart.
Not sure how to check off car to see if it works. If you know let me know.
Hope this can help someone.
Larry

I'm surprised no one mentioned Booster Dewey in Oregon. Booster Dewey to me since I have used him since 1990. Today the official name is Power Brake Booster Exchange.

Booster Dewey did a good job on mine too, but just be aware that he doesn't do much to the outside cosmetically except paint over whatever is there, so if you have any rust make sure you deal with that before you send it in.

FYI
Did not find any cracks in the brake booster housing.
But who ever rebuilt the unit used a chisel to bend down the tabs joining the booster body halves. That in turn distorted the booster body an caused the leak around the outer main seal. The master cylinder push rod was also heavily pitted and leaked.
TIG welded the tabs, dolly & hammered the body back to shape, made a tool to bend the tabs like they would be from the factory. All the main seals were good. Had to use my press to reassemble (press down the seal and rotate the upper body under the lower body hold down tabs).
Was going to sleeve the push rod, but the 68-76 Corvette part #BB-3P is a direct replacement push rod and comes with a new seal.
Anyone just needing a new pushrod and seal - that's easy.
Did a vacuum test, all good, painted and will be installing in the next few days.

There is another number for the rod/seal, DB-1209:

How did you do vacuum test? On power brake booster. I have a vacuum pump for AC work.
Thanks Larry

Did an air pressure test first at 5 PSI and did the soap/water. Then just used my hand vacuum pump and did a 5 minute workout. Held 7" of vacuum for an hour so called it good. Been driving the car and all is well, no whistle:)
Have a refrigeration AC vacuum pump with no regulator and thought it may draw down too fast and possibly rupture a seal. Did look at it, but the 5 minute workout was faster then rigging up something to use and control the refrigeration vacuum pump and refrigeration fittings to something that could connect to the booster.
