That's when I started buying extra parts for my car (which was still a daily driver) as I knew there would be zero support from Chryco.

A quote from William Thompson, Lord Kelvin – “I’ve thought of a better way” – once graced the lintel above the entrance to the onetime American Motors Plymouth Road headquarters in Detroit. Nowadays, in contrast, the incomprehensible scribblings of http://www.detroityes.com/mb/showthread.php?10201-Plymouth-Road-Office-Complex-off-the-market-%28Old-JTE%29&p=344253#post344253" rel="nofollow - graffiti painters mar the entrance to the otherwise stately building, an automotive landmark now facing an uncertain future.

“Today, the rear loading docks have gaping holes and the grounds are littered with mountains of dirt and debris, including twisted metal from a partial demolition of the back buildings,” Christine MacDonald wrote in the Detroit News.

A look at recent satellite images shows that the powerhouse and a later addition to the plant have been torn down, leaving only the original Kelvinator facility. Williams was reportedly convicted in 2004 of running an automotive chop shop, but city officials said they found no evidence of scrapping activities at the plant. If Williams does not pay the taxes on the property, the county could repossess it as soon as spring 2014.

Built in 1927 for Detroit-based appliance maker Kelvinator, the Amedeo Leoni-designed Plymouth Road facility became the headquarters for Nash – and later, American Motors – following the January 1937 Nash-Kelvinator merger. Though Nash and AMC automobile production remained in Kenosha, Wisconsin, the Plymouth Road headquarters did turn out Sikorsky Model R-6 helicopters during World War II, as well as house the offices for Nash and AMC executives and the companies’ design and engineering staff. AMC sold off Kelvinator in 1968 and moved its headquarters to the 26-story http://skyscraperpage.com/cities/?buildingID=3572" rel="nofollow - American Center in Southfield, Michigan, in 1975, but kept the Plymouth Road facility as its engineering headquarters, a role the facility would fill until Chrysler bought AMC in 1987.

http://pinterest.com/pin/create/button/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fblog.hemmings.com%2Findex.php%2F2013%2F05%2F06%2Famcs-plymouth-road-headquarters-future-in-doubt%2F&media=http://images.hemmings.com/wp-content/uploads//2013/05/PROC_700.jpg&description=AMC%26%238217%3Bs+Plymouth+Road+headquarters+future+in+doubt" rel="nofollow - http://images.hemmings.com/wp-content/uploads//2013/05/PROC_700.jpg" rel="nofollow">PROC_700

Chrysler then kept the Plymouth Road complex as its Jeep and truck engineering offices until June 2009, when it relocated those engineers to the Chrysler Technology Center. Following Chrysler’s spring 2009 bankruptcy, the disposal of the 1.4 million-square-foot, 54-acre complex (an https://maps.google.com/maps?q=14250+Plymouth+Road,+Detroit,+MI&hl=en&ll=42.372904,-83.184384&spn=0.001844,0.001794&sll=43.871754,-72.451472&sspn=5.769468,3.674927&hnear=14250+Plymouth+Rd,+Detroit,+Wayne,+Michigan+48227&t=h&z=19&layer=c&cbll=42.372904,-83.184383&panoid=NUt54UD1GKCnldIzmEsTdg&cbp=11,17.96,,0,-13.37" rel="nofollow - old listing for the site pegged it at 1.5 million square feet and 57 acres) fell to Old Carco, the company formed to handle the assets Chrysler shed in its bankruptcy proceedings; Old Carco then put the complex up for sale with an asking price of $10.5 million, but sold it a year later for $2.3 million as part of a package deal to Manchester Plymouth LLC of Mount Clemens, Michigan.

Unlike RACER Trust, which was formed to handle some of GM’s discarded assets post-bankruptcy (including the http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2013/04/29/willow-run-assembly-plant-faces-the-wrecking-ball/" rel="nofollow - former Kaiser-Frazer and Hydra-Matic assembly plant at Willow Run ), Old Carco was under no obligation to sell former Chrysler assets to companies committed to creating jobs and revitalizing the surrounding community.

Of the former Nash/American Motors headquarters, only Plymouth Road and the American Center remain. Chrysler demolished the Kenosha assembly plant and headquarters in 1989.

Months ago, http://www.detnews.com/_" rel="nofollow - - Jeep -Truck Engineering, known in recent years as the http://www.allpar.com/corporate/factories/PROC.html_" rel="nofollow -

When the old Chrysler Group went into bankruptcy, PROC was not transferred to the new Chrysler Group; the bankrupt entity sold it to a new owner, who flipped it to Terry Williams, convicted in 2004 of running a “chop shop”, and who reportedly owed $930,000 in taxes on the property by April 2013. Williams claimed that he was not actually destroying the facility to get scrap metal, and said he had a federal grant to convert the building into a home for autistic children. The complex also had a health activity center, auditorium, and cafeteria.

The city was to have foreclosed in 2014, but appears to have moved forward more quickly, most likely as a result of newspaper coverage.

While efforts are under way to save old Ford plants in Detroit, no such rescue attempts appear to have been organized for this grand facility which has no shortage of historical significance; it may, indeed, be too late for any attempt at preservation or serious re-use, with cabling likely torn out. However, it is ironic that as Chrysler runs short on office space in Auburn Hills, a development center which was until recently used to design and prototype Jeeps and http://www.allpar.com/cars/dodge/_" rel="nofollow -

I remember this as well.   and to think  when I heard of it  I was kind of happy it wasnt Ford or Chevy that bought AMC   I was thinking that at that point of time that Chrysler would actually do something for the Hobby of AMCers and produce some parts for us.    Back in 89 I started my own mini Junk yard of only AMCs to try and save as much as I could   still have many parts and cars  but as we know they are getting harder and harder to get your hands on

Speaking of demise of another Auto maker. Here in Adelaide South Australia the GM giants have decided to close down the local Holden lines in Elizabeth SA and Engine plant in Fishermans bend Vic. ONE man decided the fate of over 2000 employees and over 12000 workers in supply and maintenance areas. The closure will decimate the local area of Elizabeth and surrounding suburbs. The federal government (liberal) did little to nothing to stop this. Meanwhile the state (labour) premier bent over backwards to try and get GM to stay. A sad day for South Australia.

Yep Fiat bought Chrysler starting in 2009, by 2011 was the majority owner and 1/20/14 they finally bought the remaining percentage...

Chrysler/Dodge/Ram-Jeep and Mopar are now brands of Fiat along with Ferrari Maserati Alpha Romeo, and Lancia. So its got some good company lol

Holden, Ford and possibly Toyota will no longer manufacture vehicles in Australia.
The remaining vehicles sold will just be re branded imports.
No more rear wheel drive action around here anymore!

My dad and brother worked there for many years. Dad was a clay modeler (remember those?) from 1970 until the buyout (retired from Chrysler in 2000) with Frank Pasko (sp?), Felix De Rose, Keith Goodnough, Gerry Pietila, Chuck Hosper, and knew Vince Geraci, Bob Nixon, Jim Pappas, the list goes on. I worked there myself as an IT contractor from 1998 - 2004, when we moved out to the Auburn Hills HQ ("the mall"). The stories about some of the surrounding establishments are interesting, to say the least ;-)

Sad that it didn't get the protection other historical monuments get.

Bids start at $500 for AMC headquarters in tax sale

http://www.detroitnews.com/staff/29759/christine-macdonald/" rel="nofollow"> Christine MacDonald , The Detroit News 10:46 a.m. EDT October 7, 2015

Want to buy the onetime headquarters of American Motors Corp.? Bidding starts at $500.

The 1.4 million-square-foot facility on Plymouth Road near Schaefer is among the 25,500 properties up for sale during the second round of the Wayne County tax foreclosure auction that began Tuesday.

The massive complex was a hub of Detroit innovation for more than eight decades, but became a dumping ground in just three years, according to a 2013 Detroit News article that highlighted its plight. As recently as 2009, more than 1,000 Chrysler employees worked at the site designing Jeep Grand Cherokees and Dodge Durangos. The complex, which opened in 1927, also was home of Kelvinator, a refrigerator manufacturer.

Chrysler wanted the Jeep name and was willing to acquire the entirety of AMC to get it. Subsequently, others have been willing to swallow Chrysler for the Jeep name.

Back in 1970 or 71 (??) I was lucky enough to get a tour of the AMC manufacturing plant. I was just 16 or 17 years old. It was awesome to see the assembly line in action. It was during the week so it was in full operation that day and something that I will never forget!

One thing that I remember seeing that blew my mind at that time was how they formed a hood skin. The worker would slide a large piece of sheet metal into a press that was as tall as the building, the top die would come down and press the sheet into the shape of a hood. When the top die went up the worker pulled out a fully formed and trimmed hood skin. I think they were Ambassador hoods, but don't really remember for sure.

The assembly line was amazing too! As the cars came down the line the parts for that car would meet up and a couple of workers would bolt stuff onto and into the car shell. It was pretty cool stuff!!

Ah great thanks for posting... so the Jeep guys were displaced/gone homeless when Chrysler filed for bankruptcy in 2009...

-that explains that: I was told by my local former AMC Jeep dealer owners that 'Diamler let the Jeep guys go, and they went to Ford. The AMC people went to GM.")

-Notice at that point Ford came out with very Jeep looking 'Escape' SUV and trucks get the Jeep style front suspension (the new Mustangs even look more like a Javelin with bulging rear fenders?)

-Notice at that point Chevy got an all new seven main bearing inline six, which went into Hummer H3. And Chevy made the PT Cruiser look-alike.

That's about when Diamler ended the 4.7 SOHC AM V8 too? (around 2006-2009?)

The bankruptcy filing marks the end of the now scrubbed lawsuit: State of California vs GM -centering upon the all new GM EV1 which inadvertently drew in Chrysler for the US Fed emission control credit deal allowing GM and others to sell more cars in Cal since the EV1 would pollute less. (huge lawsuit from about '94 to 2006 when Schwarzenegger became governor ...and Cal filed for bankruptcy first!)

Hence, make a long story short, the GM & Chrysler 'bailouts' were not bailouts at all: they were US Fed legal compensation for lawsuit with Cal ...but is all basically covered up & the Internet is obviously been scrubbed -back then I used to follow the lawsuit on the Internet (C.A.R.B. vs GM etc: The lawsuit was published in public on Internet, day by day proceedings back then) since I was so appalled they were destroying the EV1 (GM had to destroy all the EV1s because they were deemed illegal by the lawsuit)

-This was a really bad time for Diamler to purchase corporate ownership of Chrysler, as I see it.
-Just like when Renault 'accidentally' purchased more than 48% stock in AMC, and forced AM to sell AM General (because no foreign company can own a US military supplier) So when Diamler purchased controlling interest of Chrysler, Chrysler was forced to sell it's military business.

Thanks again for posting info about the building, what they were doing with it & when it sold etc.

The building no doubt was much in need of refurbishing: comparatively 'ancient' electrical system, poor efficiency rated insulation qualities etc -a 'white elephant' like the Twin Towers in NYC: looked good but cost too much to remodel.
