Here I will start a thread on the history of AMC Rambler products produced by Australian Motor Industries. Any forum member with vital information about the history of AMI and it products can add to this thread. Factory Photos, production figures, models of cars, one off or more AMI fully imported AMC's , specifications of certain years, documents, the AMI dealerships, sales broachers, etc etc etc. All this info will help future Aussie Forum members to learn more about the history of their AMC and it's producer. Enjoy

Steve Fripp

Lets start with a factory photo of a 1961 Rambler Ambassador Sedan. The first year of many more of AMC being produced in Australia. I wonder how many of these were built and if any have survived.

Hey Huddy. I have an original AMI booklet and wallet that came with my Matador. I don't know how to put it on the forum. All the user books came with my car. I'd like to put the AMI on your thread. It shows workshop photos etc and photos of most of the breeds they assembled. Cheers.

Great idea Huddy, we should get it made sticky so it stays at the top.

For a lot of good AMX and Javelin stuff have a look at my website:

http://www.australianjavelins.com" rel="nofollow - www.australianjavelins.com

The media section contains a lot of scans of old advertising material, brochures and magagazine road tests from back in the day. I have tried to maintain the focus on stuff specifically related to the aussie cars.

I do have a little bit of stuff for other aussie AMC vehicles so will have a look and see what I can post up here.

good stuff... to admin... can we make this thread a sticky thread... If I'm not asking too much can we have sub forums aswell... eg, Production figures, Specifications of AMI built cars, dealerships, factory photos, History, former workers etc etc. This will help us all understand the history of our Aussie AMC's and educate others. Many of us have lots of info to be shared and that stuff needs to be kept and not lost in time. I believe this forum is the place for this information to be recorded.

Kind regards Steve Fripp

Hey Steve, I was going to suggest maybe you put some key details in the first post, things like production numbers and a dealership list, you can always go back and edit it to add any more information as it comes to light.

I've got a some paper work from Grenville Motors that need to be scanned. Some of it came straight from AMI to Grenville Motors, eg typed letters regarding suggested retail prices on certain AMC models, options etc. I also have with me a couple of yearly diaries that once belonged to one of their sales reps. These diaries gives your all the information about his sales inquiries, trades, customer names, phone numbers, type of vehicle that they were inquiring about and also tells you if the deals were done. This info is very interesting, eg... Cadbury Chocolates inquired about purchasing a new Rambler at one stage, so did a Mr Palumbo. With Mr Palumbo, his nephew today owns a Rambler and is a member of the NSW Hudson AMC club.

Lets get the ball rolling.

AMI put a booklet out commemorating their Golden Jubilee (1926 to 1976) Here's the cover and a couple of inside pages.

I've also got heaps of AMI bulletins which were sent to dealers for specific models, like this one:

I believe a guy in Adelaide is writing a book, putting the AMI history together. I'll email him this thread as it may help him.

AMC Rambler registrations in Australia from 1957 to 1977 = 12664 cars and 1840 station wagons which isn't many in the grand scheme of things (ie they only made approx this many HK Monaro's all up which is one model only) so let's try to save as many aussie Ramblers as we can Smile

Yeah Hornets in 70,71 cost nearly as much as a GTHO Falcon (not sure how this later one at $6490 compares). I have an old Wheels mag, I will have to find, which has prices in it that I will put up on forum for comparison. Javelins cost nearly twice as much again at (don't quote me until I find mag) nearly $9000 compared to around $4000 for a GTHO

I wonder how accurate those production numbers are, seems to be a few items missing, the one and only Gremlin for a start and I thought there were a few 1970 Ambassador sedans as well as the coupes.
Interesting about the 71 Javelin, there was one in Perth a while back that was apparently brought in as an evaluation model, 401 and factory 4 speed, seems like it might be that car.

Anyway, here is the Gremiln at the Sydney Motor Show:

Sorry it did mention the Gremlin. One imported to go to various state motor shows. RHD, orange body with black stripes 232ci 3spd manual floorshift. There is about half a page devoted to each year so I just skipped mostly to the Australian registration records which is the only way they could ascertain approx how many were built. So they were accurate to an extent but numbers quoted could be cars built the year before or in the case of some ie the AMX's that took awhile to offload a year or 2 later. The AMX was given an introduction over Bathurst that year to advertise it's sale in OZ as it was faster then any of the cars at Bathurst that year. Would like to see that ad. The 71 Javelin (which was purple) was severly damaged in the care of AMI but was fixed and sold. The Marlin was red/black and I am sure it was on ebay in the last couple of years. There is plenty more great info. Would people like me to type out each year as a seperate post as I get time to save everyone trying to track the books down? Other things I think I missed 4 Ambassodor hardtop coupes in 1969 with 343ci etc etc

That's the one and only Aussie Gremlin, so yes, back in the US now. Obviously a few private imports made it out here along with some brought in by US military personnel that were stationed here.

There is a Marlin in John Ivey's collection in Perth, don't know if it is the Aussie car though:

And this is the 71 AMX, again can't confirm that it is the actual Aussie car, but that's what the owner thought it was, it's obviously had a colour change along the way if it is:

Was sold a few years back and went East I think.

70Hornet, maybe you can scan that series of articles and post them up here for us. Will be something else to look out for on eBay now.

I would say that is the 71 Javelin as it does mention 71 Javelin 'AMX'. Maybe their source was incorrect on original colour OR maybe it was sprayed that colour at AMI after whatever the big accident it had while with AMI. Also copies of most Restored Cars mags I think are readily available as back issues through that magazine which is published by Eddie Ford. The Marlin was stated as red/black and I am 90% sure I saw one on ebay a year or so ago saying it was assembled in Australia?

Date Posted: Feb/18/2013 at 1:00am
The 71 AMX was painted by the guy who had it in Perth, I don't know what colour it was before but quite likely the colour was changed. Could have been half a dozen different colours over 40 odd years.

That picture of the Marlin was taken in 2007, so wouldn't be the same car you saw on eBay. I have no idea what the origins of Johns car are, could well be a private import.

I mate of mind that owns a 56 Rambler Wagon RHD has always remembered a Red and Black Marlin on display at Grenville Motors in Sydney back in 1965 or 1966. I couldn't remember if he said if it was RHD or LHD. I assume it was the AMI import car but saying that, AMI could well have shipped the car to various AMI showrooms across the country to get feed back. Who knows.

Interesting stuff Tongue I only have a computer and printer so unable to scan but will try to find someone who can but if you email mailto:restoredcars@iinet.net.au" rel="nofollow - restoredcars@iinet.net.au or ring 03 54762212 you should be able to order the back issues of Restored cars 177, 178 and 179 with the AMI/Rambler stories for around $10 each I think. Also they may know of other Restored cars issues that have dealt with Ramblers as the magazine stretches back to the early 70's. Has anyone got any pics of AMI in Melbourne and of any Aussie Ramblers being assembled (especially Hornets Smile ). Huddy55 I would say that was the aussie red/black Marlin your friend saw all them years ago for sure.

I have done much searching for AMI factory pics. I have found some good stuff on the Picture Australia website, type in AMI or Australian Motors Industries and a few pics can be found but mostly the early toyotas etc. Some Ramblers but not much.

Most of the advertising gives the address as Cook Street, Port Melbourne, but that may have been the corporate office rather than factory.

Absolutely, by the way that AMI service centre building is long gone. Previously when I thought the AMI factory was in Bertie St, where I thought it was backed onto the "Service Centre" in Ingles St, as stated in Micks documentation. I guess it would make sense to have everything within close proximity.
The Toyota headquarters are across the road in Bertie St and several of their factories that where there have now shut down. I may be way off the mark on the location but if it is correct both sites are now being developed into apartments...surprise surprise.

As some of you may know, my other project car is a 1956 Dodge Coronet. Among the many boxes of parts that came with the vehicle, there was a container with the original keys belonging to the car inside a leather keyfob. Sorting through parts, getting ready to start reassembly soon and coming across the old dirty leather keyfob, I gave it a clean. I was suprised to find what was written on the keyfob.

Is it possible this is the same dealership that was selling Ramblers?
Maybe the elderly owner that owned the vehicle before the guy I bought it off, bought it from there?
Maybe it was a trade in on a Rambler at some time?
If only the car could talk!!!
If it did come from the same Grenville Motors, it was a pretty cool find.

Man that is a great find. Very Rare. Yes it is indeed the same Grenville Motors. Grenville Motors did sell Landrovers, Rovers, Desotos (i'm certain), Triumphs and others before they had the Rambler Franchise. Google search and you will see that Larke Neave & Carter owned Grenville Motors on William Street Sydney. Good find mate and it is a keeper. I buy it of youWink

Cool!!! I am stoked. So....It just may be possible that both my cars were at the same dealer at some time? That's just freaky. My 67 American came from Sydney(told to me by previous owner that bought it in about 1969). So was Grenville Motors the only Rambler dealer in Sydney? When did Mascot Motors come about and what did they do? Were they a dealer or a service centre/parts supplier in the early days?
I'll have to put the keyfob away with the glovebox owners manual that is for the Dodge under lock and key for safe keeping. Wow!!!

They just knocked it down. I stopped to have a look a couple of weeks back. Parked for about a minute, pulled out, got on the freeway and ended up having to drive on a flat tyre for half a mile because of roadworks. See below for the end result. I don't think the old girl was happy about her first home being knocked down. :(

It's basically where the Toyota factory is now, although there is nothing that remains of the old plant.

Been a while since this thread had a boost, Jason (70 hornet) tracked down this picture of the former Albury Rambler dealership from around 1967. Looks like they had the whole AMI lineup covered. The dealership was located in Kiewa and the building itslef only got bowled over a couple of years ago to make way for a new library.

Yeah the building was in Kiewa street Albury NSW. I am not sure how long it was the Rambler dealer. That is Exide battery dealer next door (you can just see the sign) and an Ampol was a couple of doors from this. Now all gone for new library. The building was very old and I have seen some early pictures with horse and carriages out the front. It was still being used (but I can't remember what for) right up until it was demolished a couple of years ago for the new Albury library/museum. I wonder what the cars are in the window that you can't see very well. It wasn't that wide but it went back a fair way the old building.

I have been told that the old Australian 1974 movie 'Peterson' with jack Thompson has some scenes in a Melbourne AMI/AMC dealership.

I saw "Petersen" recently; there is a scene in an AMI dealership. Hornets also popped up in episodes of local police dramas "Homicide" and "Division 4".

Victoria Police had a couple of Rambler Classics circa 1966 - got footage of one somewhere, will upload it to YouTube as soon as I find it. Meanwhile, here's a few pictures:

http://www.ozemergencyservices.com.au/index.php?=com_&view=article&id=1777

Scroll down until you get to "1966"...

And here's a link to some great shots of Ramblers in Oz:

http://trove.nla.gov.au/picture/result?q=Rambler

Again, takes a bit of trolling through, but well worth the effort!

Also got a very brief (10 seconds!) Australian radio commercial for the "Rambler V8" from AMI - will link to that once I've uploaded it..

Look out for next issue of the Australian Muscle Car magazine (due out late July2014 issue75) with an article on Australian Hornet's and a very nice surviving, 1 family owned, original AMI built model Smile I have been given a sneak peak and it has an interview with Ben Ludlow from WA about THEM V8 Hornet's which will clear a lot of misinformation floating around about these cars once and for all. But be happy in knowing they DO exist Smile
