Unfortunately no. but I can tell you this story.  When I graduated High School I bought a 70 AMX. it was a 390 4 speed a/c car.  None of the people knew how to mod an AMC so I called up AMC located in Elmsford, NY ask asked for some info. I was bounced around and finally got on with a guy named Frank Lipare. Frank was a Senior Manager in the Field Service Department. He told me the he and a fellow AMC Manager scooped the car off the assembly line in 1970 and transformed it into an SCCA car. A lot of the work to the body was done at a boat shop in Long island, the fiberglass front and rear flares. The motor was done by the famous Jocko Maggicomo and Speedwin Automotive in Long Island.  The car raced at Bridgehampton and Lime Rock. It was raced until 1975 when it became illegal due to the cubic inch restriction. They decided not to destroke it so it was parked until like 1976 when Frank began to club race it, again at Bridgehapton Long Island and Lime Rock Conn. Frank did help me with technical infor and parts. I first saw the car at his home in Manhassett, Long Island. I even went a few times with him to Lime Rock and Bridgehampton to help out on track day.  I bought the car in 1982 and street raced it in NJ almost exactly how it was set up for road racing. Smoked a lot of people. Sold it in 1986 and got it back in 2002 where it has been sitting since.. Frank passed away in 1988 and so did the document history of this car.  I will completely go through it and bring it back to the almost exact condition it was when raced with a few modern upgrades..

It has a 390, Venolia 11.5 to 1 pistons, Ported 291 heads, cross ram, Reed roller can T-10 4 speed,4 wheel discs, ATL fuel cell.

Not sure, just some shows and some street action for sure. I know he used factory front discs and some type of rear disc.  In the time it was out of my possession the owner attempted to install some huge bendix set up but It never was worked out.  When I get it apart I will take pictures.  I plan on using Control Freak front end components...  One thing at a time.. I need to get it completely apart and mounted on a rotisserrie to see what i need to do.  it's going to be a long winter.

Well:   The engine bay is painted and the engine is set in but I will most likely need to pull it again to install the headers/sidepipes.  The pipes are currently at Jet Hot getting a satin black coating. In the meantime the suspension is in sans the strut brackets which once again are being left out for easier header installation.  I also fit the front panel, grille ,and hood.  All line up fine.

Going to work on installling some of the under hood components that can be done without limiting access to removing the engine  for header installation.  Installed the Accusump and remote filter, going to work on the oil cooler bracxkets and the brackets for the Chevy L88 aluminum radiator.

Photos soon .

Is the coating on your headers just a powder coat, or what kind of material is it? What temps are they rated up to? The car is coming along nicely though. Can you post pictures of the engine bay?

TO ALJAV:

THE HEADERS ARE A ONE OFF CUSTOM PIECE MADE IN 1970 FOR THE AMC SCCA RACE EFFORT. AS FAR AS I KNOW NO OTHERS EXIST.  MINE WERE DECENT EXCEPT FOR SOME BANGED IN SPOTS FOR CLEARANCE WHICH I LEFT.  I HAD THEM OUT OF THE CAR FOR A FEW MONTHS AND ASKED A FEW MANUFACTURERS IF THEY WANTED TO USE THEM TO MAKE MORE SETS, NO ONE RESPONDED.  THEY WOULD BE PRICEY TO MAKE.  THE JET HOT COATING ALONE COST ME $450.00 PLUS $175.00 SHIPPING.

Hey J.J.I remember it seems like a lifetime ago I bought a detroit locker off you brand new original AMC in the box I still have the car that its in and the box or whats left of it, still to this day. I remember you showed me that car in a warehouse in the heart of Kearney NJ. Often wondered what happent to it, now I know. NJ is/was a hotbed of AMC activity, with all performance model represented. I wondered what happened to all of them. There was about half a dozen in Montclair alone. My Scrambler came from Lyndhurst from a guy names Roger. Does it ring a bell? Ive been searching for history on my car for 30+ years. Good luck with your project, Scramboy.

great car. please keep us updated...

I have a question about the drain-back lines from the valve covers.  is that how it was run when it was raced with the SCCA?  I have oil starvation problems in my road race Javelin and have been thinking I need to add he drain-back lines.

Do you know why there are 2 lines on one side and only 1 on the other?

thanks.

Yes this car was run in SCCA with 3 drain backs. The right side for some reason only has one. I believe the Starter is in the way.  I used -8 lines.  In my opinion the drain backs are the single best thing to do on the AMC it also runs a 3 qt Accusump which is the 2nd best thing to do to insure pressure. Keep the sump full and have a backup supply in case of cavitation.  This car has a Canton oil pan with recent updates. Canton thinks it is one of their first pans since it was done in 1969,  still works.  I use a -12 line from the pickup to the external inlet port.

With all the very cool stuff you are doing on this car, you are out the most of our leagues leaving the most common repsonse as WOW!

I don't do 100 concourse restorations because I think it is silly to not take advantage of newer technologies and more modern engineering and manufacturing techniques on many of the replacement parts or alternatives that are out there even on simple things like a one wire alternator, electronic ignition or even an aftermarket carb to replace the dinky little AFB that AMC put on their early  muscle cars which limited the output of engines in many AMC cars.

That being said,  what you are doing is way beyond what most of us will ever even attempt to tackle.  Keep up the good work.

This is one "sweet as" build.  The car was purpose built way back in the day to race.  It's your car and built it the way you want- to show the rest of the auto work how good AMC.  If people don't like your car-tough, they didn't spend any sweat, tears or money in it.  I personally like it A LOT!

THANKS GUYS!   I did not mean to whine, but I was under the impression that the majority of the folks here are involved with 100% stock restorations and that major modifications like I have horrify the purists.   I know some Corvette restore guys that would fight each other over factory correct radiator hose clamps......... My intent was not to anger the guys doing 100 point show cars.

Like I said I thought this was a " RESTORATION" forum and modified cars were looked down on.

The difference is that this car was built by a couple of AMC Executives who worked in the Elmsford, NY office. It was not an " official" AMC sanctioned effort but was more unofficial.  From what the builder told me, the car was delivered to the  Elsmford Corporate office in late Summer 1969, before the 70's came out. It was tne transformed into an SCCA B Production car and raced at Lime Rock CT and Bridgehampton, NY. The owner lived in Manhasset, Long Island and had a summer home in the Hamptons near the Bridgehampton track.

I bought a 70 AMX 390 GO Pack and wanted , like all other young boys, to hop it up.  After going to all of the speed shops in NJ I was suprised to learn that not many people knew about the AMC motor. I took it upon myself to call AMC Corporate in Elmsford and asked if anyone could help me with my car.  I was put in touch with a guy named Frank Lipare, the builder of the car. I wne to Manhassett Lon Island to see the car.  By that time it had become class illegal in B Production since the cubic inch engine limit was dropped to 305 and Frank did not want to develop a 304.  So he garaged it and club raced it. I accompanied him on several occasions to Bridgehampton to help with the pit duties I never drove the car but saw it it action.  In 1981 I bought the car as is in race form, took it to NJ . All I did at the time was put DOT tires, lights and street raced it.  Even  in  roadrace trim with the 3.54's it was a total beast. Did not run the cross ram at that time. I ran a Torker and an 850 double pumper.  The car was so unusual, most people did not know what it was, but it was well known in North Jersey and lower NY. From 1986 to 2012 the car basically sat and did nothing.  Life got in the way of fun, but I find myself here in 2013 waiting to get the beast on the street again. This time with a few modern updates,  not too many to spoil it's roots.  At least now I have the knowledge, time, and money to do it up how I want it.

I bought a '70 AMX 390 go-pak new in Feb, 1970. I street raced the car for several years but ended up selling it in 1979. I just bought a '70 AMX almost identical to the one I had back in the day, except that this one is an automatic. Yeah, too many sports injuries have taken their toll on my right shoulder and at 67 my racing days are over. I remember going to the ''70 Trans-Am race at mid Ohio and looking under Donahue's Javelin and seeing nothing that resembled my car! I guess B production rules were tighter than Trans-Am.  I am enjoying your write-ups and am looking forward to seeing the final results. You've done a lot of things I thought about like the Control Feek suspension, maybe some day.

IT'S FUNNY THAT THIS CAR HAD A ROLLER CAM AND NEVER HAD ANY CAM WALK ISSUES BUT DUE TO PEER PRESSURE I INSTALLED A NICK ALFANO CAM ANTI-WALK PLATE KIT

. I ALSO INSTALLED THE MANDATORY VALLEY OIL LINE, ONCE AGAIN THIS MOTOR WAS TORTURED ALL IT'S LIFE WITHOUT A VALLEY OIL LINE AND NEVER HAD ANY ISSUES. TESTIMONY TO THE OIL DRAIN BACK LINES, KEEPING THE OIL IN THE PAN WHERE IT BELONGS.

Pardon the simpleton question, but are the drain-back lines under pressure?...or strictly gravity fed?

THE OIL DRAIN BACK LINES FROM THE VALVE COVER TO THE PAN ARE NOT UNDER PRESSURE. TRUE THEY DO CONNECT TO THE CRANKCASE SO THEY WILL SEE SOME PRESSURE / VACUUM AS THE CRANKCASE ATMOSPHERE CHANGES UNDER OPERATING CONDITIONS.  NO PCV ON THIS CAR ONLY CRANKCASE BREATHERS IN THE VALVE COVERS.

Awesome project Mr. Joe,

Thanks for restoring an old AMC that was born as an SCCA BP car. Preserving treasures like this one is imperitive. It's quite interesting to see that the oil drain back issues were well known back in the day and how they were dealt with.

Keep on posting photos and telling us about your progress.

10-4 ON THE OIL DRAIN BACK.  YES IN THE " PERFORMANCE AMERICAN STYLE" BOOK THEY ARE MENTIONED.  CURIOUS THAT THIS CAR ALSO RAN  A 3 QUART ACCUSUMP, AND NO VALLEY OIL LINE. WHEN I TOOK IT APART LAST FALL THE MAIN BEARINGS WERE ALMST GOOD ENOUGH TO PUT BACK IN, AS WERE THE ROD BEARINGS. COURSE I DID NOT REUSE THEM.  THERE WAS ALSO NO TYPE OF CAM ANTI-WALK SYSTEM IN PLACE WITHOUT ANY TIMING COVER CONTACT ISSUES RELATED TO ROLLER CAMS. I DID INSTALL A NICK ALFANO ANTI- WALK KIT AS WELL AS HIS VALLEY OIL LINE JUST FOR HOOTS AND GRINS.

SORRY FOR THE CAPITAL LETTER. AS I GET OLDER MY VISION GETS WORSE!!!!!!

Wow, how did I miss this! I had seen the first picture on page one when doing a web search and somehow missed this thread. The car sitting outside looking neglectid made me sad Cry. It's great to see the progress!

This has some of my favorite things, flared fenders, road racing, dual carbs, and AMC!Shocked
Have you been to any vintage races, this car would be a hit at the event at Road America! Will it be street legal? If so you should hit some of the pro-touring events. Great place to use the car to it's limit in a safe environment.
Either way, FUN!

I am not sure exactly how this car will be used, but I will tell you it will have license plates on it.  I want to keep as much of the SCCA heritage as possible although it will have a full mostly stock interior ( without hearer or A/C).   It is a lot of work getting it more street friendly and chasing parts is killing me.  Remember I street raced the car in the early 80's just as it rolled off the track. Most of the time with DOT legal rubber but there were times when I ran it without the hood, straight headers and Goodyear Rain tires.  The motor has not been toned down but I now have a set of custom Porter muffler side pipes that will make it quieter.  It was quite a ride back in the day with no carpet, headliner, one seat, full cage and a window net blasting down the road. The mechanical Moroso tach saw 7000 in 4th gear a few time on the New York State Thurway.

Deciding the direction of any car build is tough. I suspect even more so with a car like this with two distinct histories. Dedicated road racer, then crazy street car.

The Vintage racing world is a great way to go but the car would need to be prepared with that in mind as to be built inside the rules and safety requirements of the class.

You owned it as a hooligan street car, no rules, just like the modern pro-touring stuff :)

Thinking about rolling around in a caged road-racer on the street gives me Goosebumps, freakin' awesome. (Assuming you weren't thrown in Jail for any number of traffic violations that may or may not have occurred, LOL)

GETTING READY TO INSTALL THE BRAKES.   THE HEARST AIRHEART CALIPERS WERE SENT OUT TO BE RED POWDERCOATED. THE ROTOR HATS WERE DONE IN BLACK WHILE THE ROTORS THEMSELVES ARE BEING GIVEN A SPECIAL COATING BY MIDSTATE PLATING IN FLINT, MICHIGAN.   THE FRONT HUBS ARE BILLET ALUMINUM. THE REAR CALIPER BRACKETS WERE PRECISION WELDED TO THE DANA 60 HOUSING WHILE THE FRONT BRACKET IS SPACED BETWEEN THE SPINDLE AND THE KNUCKLE.

THE ROTORS ARE 12 INCH X 1.25 FRONT AND REAR AND SHOULD STOP THIS BEAST.  I REMEMBER WHEN I FIRST GOT THE CAR IT HAD STOCK FRONT KH CALIPERS AND MATADOR WAGON REAR DRUMS.  AT THE TIME THEY WERE THE HOT TIP!!!!

I have the same anti-sway bar in my car, I didn't like the mounting brackets so I fabricated this last spring, had to work around my panhard bar brackets, Works nice.

Mine needs longer links to get the bar off the axle tube.  When I install the correct lower shock plates I will take care of that.  Hopefully mount the rotors and calipers this weekend.

SORRY FOR THE MULTIPLE POSTS.  THIS IS WHAT THE CAR LOOKED LIKE IN 1984 ARKED ON THE STREET IN KEARNY, NJ.  THANKS RICH FOR SENDING THESE TO ME.  AT THE TIME THE BODY COLOR BUMPERS WERE NOT IN STYLE BUT  I THINK THEY WORKED WITH TE BLUE.  SINCE I AM GING SILVER, I AM NOT SURE IF PAINTED BUMPERS WILL WORK AND MIGHT DO CHROME.  I HAVE ENOUGH PARTS TO DO BOTH.  OPINIONS?????

Well  yes except for the color which will be 2013 Porsche silver. the pipes / side exhaust will be Jet Hot satin black.   The wheels will most likely be 18 inch and it will have as complete a stock interior as possible except for the Recaro seats.   In the 80's I had zero interior, just one seat, front and rear glass only.  I am not using a lift off hood or deck lid and the front spoiler is long gone.  Not sure which one I will use.  The motor is exaclty the same, just new parts and a few modern upgrades such as big 12 inch brakes, 4 wheel discs, WS6 Pontiac power steering , MSD ignition,

When I was 15-16 my Karate instructor at the time had a 390 4 sped 69 AMX with Corvette flares. He went off the road ended up on its roof and needed a place to store it after a while. I talked my father into letting me keep it in the garage and that is how I got started on AMC's. This was it after it was re painted. Car wasn't on the road but needless to say the side road I lived on was never the same until he came and got it. Big smile

LOL.....I remember, you also pulled the 401  ans put a 360 in it, good thing you did, because I would have killed myself with your motor. You did eventually put a 401 in it for me.

I think the issue is "people just don't know what to say", this car is beyond amazing, it is "jaw dropping", I am quite speechless myself, except I just HAD to say something, I love it!!!!  Heart

THANKS FOR THE KIND WORDS.

THE BRAKES ARE SOMETHING THAT THE PREVIOUS OWNER STARTED BUT DID NOT EXECUTE .  THE CALIPERS ARE VINTAGE HURST / AIRHEART 4 PISTON UNITS.  THEY WERE USED IN SOME OF THE LIGHTER NASCAR CLASSES.  HAD TROUBLE GETTING SEALS FOR THEM SINCE EACH CALIPER PISTON IS 2 INCHES!  THE ROTORS AND 12 INCH VENTED. GOING TO USE A FACTORY POWER BOOSTER WITH A VACUUM RESERVE TANK AND A WILWOOD MASTER CYLINDER WITH AN ADJUSTIBLE REAR VALVE MOUNTER AT THE SHIFTER FOR EASY ADJUSTMENTS ON THE FLY.  THIS WEEKEND I AM GOING TO PLUMB THE BRAKE LINES WITH TEFLON / STAINLESS EARL'S LINES.
