Show us your Aussie AMC Rambler's.... Locally assembled or imported... don't matter

I start of with my 63 Classic 660 wagon that I recently purchased from forum member Aussie Rambler. This was my fathers car a few years ago and was sold soon after he passed away. It's good to have it back in the family. It still runs the alloy block 195.6 motor.

Don't think so .. It's been resprayed a long time ago but still has the Signal Red paint tag. Looks great in photos but in real life it needs work ..

Here is my 1973 Matador Wagon. It is an ex hearse with only 035,000 kms. The rear seat (middle seat) is missing due to the wooden running boards that was fitted at one stage but that too is no longer there. The dickie seat still remain folded in the back floor in mint condition. The dash and carpet are near perfect as is the body lines. I have noticed a couple of very small rust bubbles but that is nothing to worry about at this stage. Just before I purchased the car, it had a engine fire so the front wiring loom needs replacing and all the hoses need to be done as well. Paint on the hood and vent inlet is also required. Here are the photos.

Huddy
The convertible is one of 12 RHD ones made (from actual AMC factory build sheets; John Conde supplied) in Brampton, Canada. I believe they came in as fully assembled cars, not CKD like the 4 doors we have here. It has "Brampton Canada" on the shock tower/

Aussie 70s are the best Javelins IMHO .. All the best bits and pieces in the early body ..

Posted By: huddy1955
Date Posted: Apr/15/2012 at 7:19am
I couldn't agree more on that one. The 1970 Javelin's were the only AMC's in Australia fitted with the 390. The 72's were great as well with the 401. Only if we had the manual option fitted to Javelin's down under would have been sweet.

keepikng in mind that when these cars were new they were not afraid of the rain, I think a 70 would be much better to drive than the 72. I had a 72 and it was a pig. tried everything to make it a nice driver. Couldn't do it. Maybe something was bent - it had been sideswiped in the past. Never drove any good. I changed to a 70 rebel which is absolute magic. Prob for the same reason as the 70 javelin would be great. smaller car on the same suspension.
motor road tests on you tube show the 72 as a poor handler compared to its earlier cousin.

Meh .. my LHD '74 drives fine, actually more comfortable than the '69 (trunnions) .. probably depends on the condition of the car .. and keeping LHD with better parts availability probably means better condition.

Seeing were posting pics of our cars, here my old 67 American. She gets driven just about every day. Just finished a holley conversion, was absolutely fed up trying(very trying) to get that bloody WCD Carter to work properly. Seems to run and drive now better than it ever has. Smoother with heaps more get up and go.

Photo taken at Yatala Drive in.

Pic of the carby conversion, looks weird mounted sideways, but does what I need it to do.

G'day Huddy, long time no see. Hope you're keeping well. We'll be at Cooly, looking forward to it actually. Hope they dont mind stone chips and dead bugs, because mines got plenty of them. I was a bit worried about driving it down, with the carby the way it was, but it looks like it might make it now. haha.

Here is a Aussie built 1985 AMC Jeep J20. These were the last Jeeps built in Brisbane Australia. This one has the factory 360 V8 with auto. It did belong to my father and I will soon bring it back to life after 7 years out of service.

Hey Huddy, I don't really have a lot history on the car, I brought it in 2006 from a guy by the name of Ron Simpson in Tassie, he brought it in 2003 from Robert Fordham in Queensland, prior to that I have no idea. The pinstripe is actually Gold by the way.

I use photobucket, to upload your pics to that site, first join, then there will be a green button, click that to upload. It will come back to your computers files, find the pic you want to upload, then once it has been uploaded to photobucket, then put your mouse over the pic that you want to use, it will drop down a link. Move the cursor down to where it says IMG code. move the cursor over the IMG code, left click the mouse it should then say "copied".
Then go to where you want to paste your pic, ie this site, then right click the mouse and click on paste. Job done.
Hope this helps mate. BTW, welcome.

Those NOS Rambler hubcaps/wheelcovers are 14" and will fit anything. They were common on the 72 to 75 Matadors and Hornets in Australia. You being a regular customer...mate.....cheap at $100 for the set of four or $120 for a set of 5 hubcaps. They are still in original packaging.

Nice 64 classic you've got there mate, is the grey one your restoration project?

Did they sell many 65 classic sedans in Australia?

As the 64 and 66 classics seem to be a bit more common thats all.Wink

Anymore pics of that red 65 hardtop at last years Cooly Rocks show?

The grey one is a parts car for now, I have the engine in getting bored and head work done so when it done it can go straight into the white one. I will post pics of the build as it progresses. Eventually I would like to resto it with a modern efi six and leaf sprung but will more likely end up with the other v8 for ease of moving around and sit around waiting for a crash or a broken window. The white one should be how I want it to be by the end of the year. I might put pics of the power steering/brakes all adapted out of falcon/commodore parts.

That red 65 Classic is actually a Convertible. It belongs to my Sister and Brother in law. It will be at this years Cooly Rocks. They Purchased it from the east coast of America and drove it west along route 66 and then shipped it to Brisbane. Very low mileage car with V8.

Here is a picture of it.

It was made from a sedan in Sydney in 1974. Stretched and tailgate made.  The original inside of rear doors, pillars and hinges are still there!!  Not the neatest job but I don't care, it adds character.
Only couple things not standard from 39 years ago, mufflers, wheels, cd/player and I put it on lpgas.
I have done ten of thousands of miles and no major issues. It is definitely NOT for sale. I love my Rambler Big smile
It is not restored but could do with some love in the paint department. ... One day.
I was told it had been in a shed near Geelong for 9 years then my mates shed for 2 then mine for a year or so til I Registered it in 2008. I have been using it as a daily driver for about 4 years but have bought another car for work.
I shall put it on club Reg this year as there seems no point paying full reg for a week-end cruiser.
I get many positive comments and a few "what is it?"  Some thinking it is a yank Ford!? Haha.
Cheers

Both cars are rare and pretty cool.

Back around 2003 while working for Dunkin Donuts, I went to Air Systems in Arkansas, USA. They made the new store packages for new and remodeled restaurants in the USA.

They also made limos, hearses and ambulances. They ordered mostly Lincolns that arrived with only the essential parts they would need for the end product and all came with big heavy duty tires. They drove them onto a track, that locked all (4) wheels in place, then sawed the car into (2) halves, spread the (2) halves apart, locking them into a preset, longer wheelbase position and proceeded to add supports and panels to stretch the frame and body panels for the eventual hearse, limo or ambulance.

Pretty interesting manufacturing system they used.

I love wagons, and I've always liked the 63 Ramblers, but I have just one question.
Why are the curb feelers on the "drivers" side of the car?

Posted By: aussie rambler
Date Posted: Jul/17/2012 at 10:55pm
i will answer that question for ya "mr huddy" .....this car was mine prior to huddy55 gettin back in his family , i had put sum 60's  accessories on it will i owned it ,like ventian blinds, ammbo tail light lens, a inside air fan and other chrome weird stuff etc , i put a full set of kurb feelers on it and to transport the car on the car trailer i took off one side ...
