Thanks to Roger...aka...forum member 1970390amx; I now have a complete AMC 20 twin grip rear end with a 3:54 gear set ready to install in Project Gremlin X. I walked into his shop this morning with a couple of camera's & no knowledge. I walked out with a wealth of information & his permission to share what I learned today. I've put together a DVD for those who are interested in learning how to set up an AMC 20 rear differential. It's one hour long, has chapter markers, and covers the following topics...
-Teardown & inspection -Roger had a 3:54 ring & pinion set waiting for me without the pinion bearing so he pressed on the new bearing & mocked up the pinion gear for a wear pattern -Carrier Bearings R&R and Ring Gear Removal -Shimming the Carrier -Using a dial indicator to confirm that the carrier spins true before mounting the new ring gear to the carrier -Shimming for Proper Gear Backlash -Checking for the Proper Pinion/Ring Wear Pattern -Installing Pinion Spacer (replacing the crush sleeve with solid spacer & shims) -Checking Pinion Rotational Torque -Final Setup -Axle & Seal Installation -End Play Shims & Hub Installation
If anyone is interested in purchasing one the cost is $10.00 + shipping and 50% of the proceeds will be donated to this forum. You can order one by sending me a PM.

I enjoyed watching this series showing the re-build. It's not something I could do myself, I wish I could because the rear in my car is going to have to be re-built due to some whine, but it's good to see how it's done and what's involved. Two questions...knowing the inherent weakness of the AMC 20 with the two-piece axles, why not install one-piece axles at this point and is the soundtrack to this video series available in the lobby? Some good tunes there.

Glad you enjoyed the series & the answer to your first question is that (IMO) the stock axles will hold up for my application given the car loaded, will be under 3000 lbs & running non sticky street tires (for now). In the event I decide to run some drag radials some day & take to the track on a regular basis; the one currently in the Gremlin would be a good donor & I think I know someone who could weld up the tubes & install the one piece axles. Maybe a project for another time, but for now I'm trying to stretch my dollars for some other goodies on the car.
The video series along with the soundtrack (lobby) is available on a DVD I put together last week to free up some space on my gallery page. I have edited my original post & updated it with details.

I just wanted to let anyone that has thought about rebuilding an AMC 20 know that this is a great video, well worth the $10 + shipping. I have always had the tools and the willingness to set up rearend but I have always been reluctant to do one because of the uncertainty about how all of the measurements were done. This video (about 1 hour long) covers all details of tearing down, taking pinion, carrier and axle measurements and rebuilding an AMC model 20 rearend. My advice if you want to try this is to buy the video and see how it's done.

Thanks, Dean. This should be a huge help. I have 4 AMC 20's that I plan to rebuild/restore and each one needs a gear swap, too.

Is there a supplier for the shims that go on the outside of the cup (or race)? The 1130's by Ratech appear to go on the inside, between the bearing and the carrier.... not between the cup and the housing.
...Found my answer. The 1130's are correct - just not exact to the originals as the inner diameter is smaller. I believe these will work fine.

All I can say is you better have a MASSIVE bench vise bolted down to a heavy table that is lag-bolted to the concrete floor when you try to rotate the case with new clutch packs in it. I have a 5-inch vise and almost broke it clamping it tight enough to the axle shaft to keep it from spinning.
That's with the two-spider limited slip, the four-spider might be easier.

Hi, Though this post is several years old, your knowledge of the AMC 20 Twin Grip, you than most might be able to answer this question. I have a '72 Javelin with an AMC 20 single grip 2.87 differential. Would it be possible to swap out my differential and put in a twin grip? Your DVD would be a great education to do this procedure.
A second part question, your familiar with the twin grip, I was under the impression that the AMC 20 twin grip contained clutch discs in addition to gears, bearings. Someone right now in the group's Parts For Sale section has a "Twin Grip" for sale with a photo. This looks like only a matter of various gears, no clutches. Is this the correct Twin Grip to put in a 1972 axle/differential case?
Thanks much, Scott

Through 1970, AMC used the 2 piece carrier with 4 spiders (Dana Power-Lock). 1971 up, they used the one piece carrier (Dana Track-Lock). Both were sold under the AMC trade name "twin-Grip". The one in the for sale section is the Track-Lock. It has clutches between the carrier and side gears. The trouble with those is the outside clutch rides against the case, and usually if the unit needs a rebuilt the case is out of spec (worn). The one piece units aren't known for their longevity.

I just put a twin grip in and there is a lot of axle play, ateast a 0.25 in! Looking at the open and the posi diffs the open has a much wider thrust block which I believe is why I have so much slop. Is there a part I am missing? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I dont know what you own or what you put in it but the factory twin grip 70 and older is a two piece housing and the thrust block is a small two piece part held together with a 1/8" roll pin it falls out very easy. if you need a picture ask and I will dig one up.

Sorry I have a 70 hornet, I'm putting a 20 from a 71 hornet because I had the smaller rear originally. I got a split case diff from my uncle, so I'm not sure what it came from. http://youtu.be/MHSVHSoieak If the link doesn't work I'll load pictures tonight, but that's what my diff looks like. My axles go in to the spider gear center, which is thinner than the thrust block on the open diff which is why I think I have so much axle play.

Hi all,
We've spent the better part of the past year retiring & relocating to the west coast to be with the grandkids. We are FINALLY settled into our new digs & upon unpacking and organizing I found 20 copy's of the AMC 20 rebuild DVD myself & Roger put together during the early stages of the Gremlin X build. I watched it again the other night & it's truly a great educational video in regards to what it takes to overhaul an AMC 20 twin grip rear end. Roger is a top notch mechanic & knows AMC 20's like the back of his hand. I shot, edited, & burned the DVD's. The Gremlin now has 3500 miles on it since the rebuild, a road trip from Denver to Kenosha & back, & still lays down two even & straight strips of rubber on command. I highly recommend having this video in your library if you want to keep an AMC 20 under your vehicle, that may, or may not...need some attention.
I've cleared all my PM's, so if you want a copy send me a new PM as some may have gotten overlooked during the move. $15 bucks will get one delivered to you if in the US, $10 bucks plus actual shipping anywhere else.
Cheers, Dean

Now..I find out there is a dvd...me and my buddy ( the smart guy) took us 10hours to rebuild my AMC model20 with all new bearing ,cutting the 1 piece axels, new 3.30 ? Ring and pinion..and a Eaton trutrack posi unit...it was way more involved and exacting then what I ever imagined....the backlash tolerances, the lbs whatever to turn the pinion , the gears meshing perfect with paint...when we were done he said....that is probably the best differential I've ever built....I told him great that makes me happy....its a beast

It seems this thread got resurrected from the archives. I no longer have the ability to burn DVD's. I did some digging, & found the "master copy" of the DVD. I successfully converted it into two digital formats...iMovie & mp4. My cost on a quality USB 2/3 "thumb drive" with space enough for both versions is about $6.00 each, & shipping has doubled since my original post. If you want a copy PM me for more info & costs shipped to you.
The "AMC Twin Grip" featured in this video built by Roger, was installed in my 1972 Gremlin X "restomod" in 2012. Powered with a puffed-up 390 & five speed...I drove the car from Denver, CO to Kenosha, WI & back in 2014. In addition...I pounded on it for an additional 4,000 miles up & down the southern Oregon coast without any issues, before I sold the car in 2020. Dean PS...I have four DVD copies left if you prefer 😉
