Assuming a reasonable recovery in the economy by next spring, I want to start a roadracing project. My aim is to buy a 304 Javelin or Hornet and build a NASA American Iron class racer.

I would like to use this thread to have members who have built, or are building a roadracing AMC a place to pose questions, share ideas and create a "database" of resourses for the community to use on their projects.

It is obvious that some of you have already "been there, done that". It would be great to be able to tap into that pool of knowledge.

I know there are individual threads regarding Engines, Suspension, etc, but not a Central Repository of RACE CAR building tips and techniques.

Anyone care to start?

i'm building a 79 AMX - 24 hour BF Goodrich Nurburgring car.    I wonder if the Toyo R888 14 tires will work

If you go with the Javelin I'm sure that someone can give you a hand with information from the Trans-Am Javelin.
I'll be keeping an eye on this topic, I like cars that go fast in a straight line AND turn Wink
There's a good blog here you might want to read through, it's mostly about making an AMC "g-machine."

i'll look at g machine info.  i use to think 13 sec straight line was a 'rush', but after 25 minutes at (nelson ledges) road race track,  or (blackhawk farms),  now thats adeneline pumping action to go as fast as you can, bends, turns and straight aways !  check you tube:  blackhawk farm mustang spirit"  awesome!

To anybody building a car from scratch...copy the rulebook... and know it inside and out.  NASA's American Iron is a great class.

I think an AMC could be up front in that class!
Spirit wheelbase too short for the rules though. Probably a Hornet or Concord?

I too am hoping for a little love from the economy and portfolio over the next 6 - 12 months.  Have a great '69 AMX but am wanting to put together a TA style 68, 69 or 70 Javelin.  So I will be watching this thread also.  Keep us posted on what you're finding out there... my first question would be what you're going to start with?  I'm not sure if I need to find something that's straight and rust free (but hideous...  $2,500?) or if I'll be happy spending more money on a good 20 footer and then going from there ($7,000 - $10,000?).

i put some money in this 79 AMX Nurburgring 'clone' and will race it at nelson ledges - fundays only of course,  hope to get a 401 in it, the 304 is totally worn and not powerful enough for acceleration coming out of the curves.  Got a 360 and 401 on engine stands, will do the 401.
I also have a rust free javelin 390 4 speed on blocks to restore.  I'll start that in 2011 as I continue to work the bugs out of the 79 AMX.   bought a 'roll cage' for a little extra safety, got to install that.

I just watched some youtube videos on cars at road courses (wrecking) definitely will install the cage and better seat belts.

I like racing the Javelin at the track but thought it weighed too much and went down to the 79 AMX.  Probably in 2011 I'll go back to the Javelin but will see how the 'go cart' 79 AMX runs in 2010.

But just on FUNDAYs !
Hope to take it to Kenosa 2010 and Greenmeade Detrioit AMC show this summer?

Hi JavMD

I have a set of 3" shoulder and lap belts I'll let go cheap if you need them. Only used once this season so they are a pretty fresh set. May have a race seat for that Spirit if you need one of those too.

The 401 sounds awfully heavy and hot roddy to put on a road track.  I know if you put your foot through the peddle on the back straight of Nelson Ledges you may just end up off the left side of the track in the ditch... or worse on your top.

Brian in Colorado has a built 401 in his AMX tube rail drag car--pushing 1,000 hp... this is what I think of when I think of a 401 in a race car.

I'd be interested to know why AMC used a built 290 in the 68 and 69 Jav Trans Am cars.  This seems awfully small.  They two other bigger options...

When it comes to cages, let the video on the attached link at Jalopnik be an inspiration, and do it right.  Bolt-ins can really be screwed up... make sure they're reinforced by solid plating.  Know your stuff or have someone else that does do it.

At the time Trans Am rules limited displacement to 5 liters, or 305 ci, and it had to be a stock based block, the 290 was all AMC had under that displacement at the time, until they came out with the 304. Ford had the Boss 302, GM came up with a 301-302.
Trans Am changed their rules every year, later on seems like they allowed 6 liter displacement.

thanks for the tip on the roll cage, already bought a pre-assembled one, came with 'solid' 3/8 inch plates,  seems like the original 1979" roll cage was the same,  (actually took pictures of the #1 car owned by Contrell in Minnesota, this fall).   But I'll check out the web site, after watching youtube videos on Nelson Ledges and Blackhawk farm and others 'wreaking', safety sure is important.

regarding the 401 and my Nelson Ledges 1979 AMX, acceleration out of the turns is an absolute must.  I also have a 70 Javelin.  If this engine turns out too powerful, then I could transfer it to the Javelin.  Regarding weigh, at least aluminum heads and alum intake manifold will help,  I would like to get the all alum Holly but way too expensive.

Any ideas on the 401 CAM?  that I should use for 2 mile road raceing???? thanks

Let me get a part number for you on those belts so you can see what they are.

Check the rules on roll cage design for SCCA & NASA. Once you start doing track days the bug will bite at some time to race it. Don't discover later (like me) it needs to be redone to be legal.

We started out with an Engle K-7 then went to a K-8 in our road race 401.
Both worked great.  K-8 made more power of course and still had good torque off the corners.
Our new roller cam by Barry Allen is even better!
What other modifications are you doing to your 401? What RPM's are you planning on running?
We have a 3.89 gear with a 14X27.5" Goodyear slick.  8000 RPM tops. we are seeing 7700rpm
at the end of the back straight at Nelsons Ledges.
Changing to a 3.70 to keep revs lower and get top speed up.

Correct.  Mostly.  Trans-Am indeed had a 5.0 liter limit back then.  The 68-69 AMCs were short-stroke 290s that were bored out to the 305 limit--these were the RKE team cars.  In 1970 some of the rules were changed as to how the 5.0 liters could be arrived at (specifically destroking), and when Penske took over the AMC team, they destroked 360s (forged steel Moldex cranks) to get down to the 305 limit...and also did things like introduce dry-sump oiling.  The production AMC 304 (3.77x3.44) as we knew it was never a 'race' motor.

There is some conjecture regarding the 1970-71 Trans-Am  engine blocks.  It is said that "Special" 360 blocks were cast with extra webbing to allow for 4-bolt mains--and these were used in some of the 2501 "Donohue Edition" Javelins made to meet the homoligation limits for SCCA.  Others say that the SR (Service Replacement) blocks were used--and that they also had the beefier castings--and because they were a standard part, did not need to be homoligated...and as such the Donohue Javelins actually all had 'regular' 360s or 390s in them.

My Donohue was a 360 car and did not have a special block. I swapped in a 401 since the motor was blown up with no heads when I got it.

Thanks for info on roll cage (back a page or so)  but for my racing, it will strictly stay 'funday' at nelson or would like to try BlackHawk Farms and will google for other places for 'fundays'.

At my age,  all I want to do is drive around a couple times.. and that does it for me... lol.   But I want safety.. so i would like to view the seat belts... if they are still for sale, don't hold them for me.

I too wish I could figure out how to "easily" post a photo.

I have a 401 in my 79 spirit amx and, if I'm not mistaken, it's the same block as a 304. It is a small block and the the weight distribution is not that bad in my car. I think it's about 54/46 front/rear. I do run with a dry sump with the tank and battery are behind the passenger seat. I had a different car like my present one that I ended up rolling in a race because of the rear end coming around without warning. My new amx has a panhard rod that corrected that completely. Even with over 500 hp the rear end stays in line coming out of corners.

I race high speed autocross at Blackhawk farms and it is a gas. My group is Midwestern Council and you should come out and try it. They also have instruction at day long schools that are well worth the minimal costs. If you want to try your car there, that's a great way to do it. Even at a race, they will let you go out with instructers. Here's the link:

TO: Chip AMX Chipster !

I just bought a 79 AMX in May 09,  put in a rebuilt T5, rebuilt the front brakes, didn't do anything to the rear and should have tighten the rear brakes to minimize whipping around on the track.
BUT what is a
PANhard ROD? and the battery behind passenger seat , what 'tank' is behind the passenger seat?

Any pictures of your set up etc please send to mailto:ohiomale03@yahoo.com - ohiomale03@yahoo.com     I have a 401 on an engine stand I hope to rebuild and put in it, probably connect to a T4 so I could also place it in a 70 Javelin

I have a t5 tranny too, it works well. The tank behind the passenger seat is a 3 gallon tank for the oil (dry sump). I have no rear seat because of the roll bar that's in there. A panhard rod is a bar that ties to the rear end and keeps it from moving sideways. It doesn't sound that good but works great, if done right. My old 79 was sideways often, but sometimes it would just snap and I'd loose it. That never happens with this new 79. Also, it's neutral! I never had a car that would start to slide and the front and the rear loose grip at the same time. If I could figure out how to put pictures on here I would show you. I will send an e-mail to you.

One other thing. I did a lot of work on my brakes, if you change things let me know. I put 14" rotors on the front, and have 12" on the back. 6 Piston calipers front, proportioning valve, ect.

I want to drop in a 401 i have on the engine stand but also due to severe budget restraints not sure what to do: either (redue the engine or merely drop it in and race and see what happens)

Proably leaning towards engine braces, put an aluminum edelbrock air gap manifold on that I already have and the 650cfm Holley headers and test on stand to see what happens, if seems good, put it in.   bromano215@roadrunner.com

GREAT...    I'm jealous !   ( I have NO time to work on my 79 AMX that I race only for fun at Nelson Ledges (cloned into a 79 AMX that raced at Norburgring by Amos Johnson in 1979 sponsored by BF Goodrich).

I couldn't even get BF Goodrich to be interested in discounting me race tires or even decals !   (Terrible !).. so   I left anything related from original 79 Norburgring Race of BFG off the car !

I'm very interested in this project.. please keep everyone updated.    I too bought a roll bar last year but again yet to put anytime into the car (due to extreme work and economic situation).

Thanks very much !

I sure am NOT getting any younger !  I would love to make my 79 AMX a priority and my 70 Javelin (rust free out of california).    Unfortunately about 20% of the population got caught in the economic downturn along with businesses.    Being self employed, I was one of them.   This summer I was fortunate to land a job but 70 miles from my house,   lost 3 hours a day driving, ruined my driver vehicle and leaving me no time to tinker on my car.   I lost 2010 to just barely making a living.   (I did sell my 72 Lemans (GTO cloned) Pontiac,  needed cash).

BUT the good news... I just landed a permanent job (and at 58 I'm lucky !), just 25 miles from my house,  the bad news, have to work at the Connecticut office for a few weeks (months?), before transferring to the local office !

So... heres to 2011 for getting back to my putting in a high performance 360 in my 79 AMX.

I'm not very computer literate so I have no idea how to place pictures on here.

My 79 AMX looks just like the 79 Nurburgring AMXs.    See the youtube 79 AMX nurburgring.

I was very fortunate in 2009 to NOT only see the #1 car at Scott Campbells house near Cleveland (Northcoast AMC club) but also locate the #2 car in Minnesota.  and While on business there,  got my self invited to that guys house to NOT only get a bunch of detailed pictures but also RIDE in it.   I can't recall his name right this second but have his business card, (the business which he sold).  He raced #2 at some vintage races and those can be seen on youtube also.

My son and I raced our 79 AMX at Nelson Ledges (just on Fun Day) for novices... last Oct and wow... slight rain mist on the track in the morning but cleared up by noon.   What a RUSH !   wish I would have done it 20 years ago.    lol,    now my youngest has graduated college,   I can attend to all my hobbies I have wanted to do over the years !!!

And watching you piece yours together will definitely help !  Thanks

Oh... I had a 68 Javelin for awhile and that one you found, the tail lights look like a 68

Well, I took the plunge and picked up that 74 Jav that was up on the local Craigslist (I think I saw somebody mention it on a posting around here) and decided to get my road race project creeping along.  All that talk about "not getting any younger" sold me on it...so damn you if my bathroom never gets fixed because of the diverting of funds!
Wink
I still need to get the 401 up and running in my first Jav, so that'll give me plenty of time to learn from your trial and error...Here's to wishing you plenty of trial and not too much error!

I bought it and sold it just as it is.  That was back in 2004/2005.  Its been sitting the same way ever since.  I still have the 22 gallon cell that goes in the that box in the back.

I think its time I get it back and finish it.

I have one of those "TA/SR" blocks. It has the exact same casting number as the 401 blocks do. And like the 401 blocks, it's main webs are thicker than the 390 block's main webs are. (Even the 70 390 blocks.) Since this block came out in 70 and the 401 didn't come out till 71, the only logical conclusion is that AMC chose to base the new 401 on the new TA block instead of the 390 block like most people think was the case. It was the 401's use of this block that made it legal for Trans Am racing. I doubt very seriously if AMC sold enough "Service Replacement" blocks per year to meet the minimum 2,500 count requirement to make the block legal for Trans Am. I don't think they sold enough 401s per year to hit that number either but the 2 combined no doubt did the trick. Does anybody know the actual 401 production numbers by year? That would be interesting reading. I do know that the 71 and 72 numbers were fairly low, the 73 numbers much better, and the 74 numbers low again, a result of the oil embargo hitting in the early fall of 73, just as the 74s were coming out. I also wonder if AMC would have been allowed to count the 401s that they sold to International starting in 74? (Not that it mattered any more at that point.)

As for this race car stuff in general, how come we can't get some of the guys that were racing Gremlins and Spirits in the 70s and very early 80s IMSA series to share their secrets? Amos Johnson, Where are you?

Great car, great build. I am doing a very similar build. A 1973 Hornet for fun track days for now. Then I do want to get into MASA AI. And some day I want to run the silver state classic. The Hornet has a 390 and close ratio 4 speed. I hope to get a few track days this year. Next for me is the cage and the dash/instruments. I will keep up with this thread, THANKS!!!

Its not as pretty as your car. But I want to build it over the next couple years into a weekend warrior road racer and AI racer. Looking at the control freak front suspension, with rack and pinnion steering. I want to get to a local track this year and see how she runs mostly stock and log the progress as it gets built. Im watching your thread with much interest. Thanks for all your info. RICH

Asif,
I see the motor is coming due, but any word on dyno testing?  Or the amount of weight you think you'll be slinging around?

Posted By: asifnyc

vnmsss,

you GOTTA build a race AMX (do you mean a 2 seater? or a humpster like mine?).  I'm looking for west coast AMC'ers to go racing with!  Cool  I want an AMC race "gang".  people already freak out when they see my yellow Javelin at a track day.  My fantasy is to get 2 or 3 or more AMC's at one track at the same time.  what say you, are you in?  Smile

Javelin74,
If all things go to plan (oops, just jinxed it) I'll be heading down to L.A. next week to dyno the motor and bring it home!

Haven't weighed it yet but I will definitely be weighing/scaling the car once it's assembled.

posted an update with more pics on my blog...

Asif,
I hear ya.  When I took my blue Jav out to Firebird last year (and the demise of the 360 sitting in it), the instructers near got into a physical exchange over who got to ride along as my instructer.  I was treated to instruction with Gordon Levy who had a long history of being around pony cars and started telling me a story about his opportunity to drive the old Folmer TA Javelin at an event a couple of years ago.  Said he was doing a double take as I pulled in and couldn't believe a Javelin had made it out.  Needless to say the car was getting crawled over...  I could imagine a reaction to a handful of prepped vintage AMC making it out!

Anyway, looking forward to the dyno results and weigh-in on your 74.  BTW, is that the bolt-on or pin on hood?  Looks like the bolt on.

I've finally wrapped up home projects so I've turned my attention back into the garage and finally some building-the roll cage and seats are first up and I hope to get the 401 that's going into the blue car off to the machine shop as soon as the tax returns come in!  Smile

Crazy?  Probably.  Expensive?  You betcha.  Was worse several months ago; had 4 more cars - 69 Judge, Ram Air III 4 sp (beater); 69 Judge, Ram Air III, 4 sp (roller/project); 68 Roadrunner, 426 hemi, 727, Dana 60 (very nice driver); 71 GTX 440, black on black, 4 sp, Dana 60 (rust free beater).  All sold.

66 SS396 4 sp Chevelle will be sold soon.  Just finished building the 396 and about to drop it back in and sell the car (complete car that needs metal work, body work, paint, interior).

67 Fairlane is pretty much finished, but motor needs freshening and it's time for new paint, too.  Should run 9's in the quarter if I can find the time to get it sorted out.

70 Ram Air IV GTO (Peppergreen/black, M21, 4.33 gear, manual steering, manual brakes, radio delete, bench seat) is in the midst of a frame off.  I have the engine (done), trans (need to rebuild it), frame (done), suspension (need to blast and paint) and buddy in Ohio (Supercar Creations in Wooster) has the body.  Should be done this year.

66 Fairlane GT convt is in paint jail in Fayetteville, NC.  428 CJ has been machined; I need to put it together.

Did I mention that I was moving halfway across the country in 3 months?

Ok, sorry for the hijack.  Maybe I should start a thread on non-AMC projects in the off-topic area of the forum.

Thanks

Scott

Engine sounds great and you're not going to be short on hp.  Might make more sense to detune some rather than add weight to the car.

Care to share the specs on the motor?  Bottom end, heads, cam, compression, induction, headers, ignition, etc?

Need to get moving on mine.  Bottom end is together, Edelbrock heads just arrived.  Need to order an oil pan.

Very nice combo!

I bought a short block 360 and edelbrock heads, have not yet put it together,   I was going to use Edelbrock recommended cam, lifters, rockers.  Tech person implied 400 HP.  Dropping it into a 'Nurburgring' cloned 79 AMX , to road race, local, at Nelson Ledges.  They have 'Fun Days, which anyone can bring their car.    I re-did the front brakes, rotors, bearings.   Did not do anything to the rear brakes or rear end.   Hum noise in the back.  time for new bearings there.  Car had originally sat for 10 years.  Bought a roll cage, yet to install.  thinking of a 'fuel cell' for safety also.   but not sure what transmission to use.   I have an old gremlin 3 speed, a javelin 4 speed, or keep the T5 mustang tranny I put in it.   Not sure it will take the HP though.  No money to get a new one !   Got some race tires to hold to the road.  too much 'squel' to the street tires

I didn't realize it was a 360, for some reason I thought it was a 401.
Very nice combo!

No need to run a 401 in American Iron.  They have hp/weight and torque/weight limits, and Asif's 360 is more than powerful enough to reach that limit.

Sounds like a nice project.  Have any pics that you can post?

What Javelin 4 speed do you have?  Close or wide ratio T-10?  Close ratio T-10 would work fine for this application.

As for the T-5, there are several flavors, some stronger than others.  Do you know what year yours is and what it came out of?

Wow, someone has been busy!!!  Every time I check out your blog, I realize how many things I have left to do.  I hope to drop in the engine and trans today, but it will be a while before it moves under its own power.

If you want to come out of the corners a bit quicker consider a lighter flywheel. I switched to a 13-lb. forged aluminum flywheel and it really helped a lot. At higher rpms the rotational inertia is way less and your motor spends its torque accelerating the car not the massive flywheel.

Of course this is a decision to make only if you haven't built your motor yet. I assume you are going to run a manual trans.

Chas.

Yep.  I'm running a McLeod 565100.  Not cheap at about $550.
