Subject: 727 build up??

Im going to be pulling apart my 727 to go through it and install a shift kit. I also want to change over to a manual valve body. Got a couple questions.

-Anyone have any reccomondations on what rebuild/shift kit to go with or stray away from?

-I heard from a mopar guy that the stock valve bodys can be made into a manual valve body. Anyone ever done this? I know that there is a template and a drill bit in a kit, but dont know if it is still available. Is it worth trying this or should i look at just getting a new valve body? Would also like to do a reverse manual but dont know that i would be able to do that on the modified stock.

Thanks

Its for my Javelin, it will be used as a street/strip car. A pretty strong 360 will be in front of it. I'll be running Indy heads and a hefty hydraulic roller cam. Probably around 400-425hp. Going to run a 4.10:1 rear end and not sure on the stall converter yet.

trans go makes a kit that will convert a stock valve body to a manual one. They also make one that allows automatic upshifts but with the ability to down shift a will and will hold whatever gear is selected. personaly I am not a fan of manul valve bodys on the street. the low sprag is a fragile unit easy to damage with street driveing and a manual valve body,IMO.  If you demand a reverse pattern you will need to buy an aftermarket valve body. a 727 will hold up to a 440 or a 423 hemi.
building one for your 360 should be easy. there are specific big block parts that are stronger. the A518 has stronger planets yet. personaly I would build a 904 type tranny with 2.70 low gears in it.if you use a stall converter I would use a big tranny cooler on it or you will over heat it. both torqueflites have race type kits avalable that have heavy duty clutches and bands. the A518 and A500 have stock clutches with higher friction holding capacitys than stock. enough rambling, if you have any specific queations just ask

And I would put in a bolt in sprag.  this is the weak link in a TF.  and Trans go makes a very good shift kit.

yes a bolt in sprag is a good idea, but it only protects the outer race from spinning or breaking the case. the springs and rollers that make it work are still subject to damage

You need to definitely call and talk to Rick at A+A like already suggested... also, you most certainly need to ask them about the low band apply!!!! I have an A+A reverse manual valve body in my 727....

Here is an article on why having the low band apply feature is so important.....

I was thinking that the trans would be plenty strong since they used them in front of hemis, but i just want it to be fresh inside and fun to drive with the manual valve body.

I also have a trans out of a 73 304 matador which i believe is a 904 that i could build, but i have no torque converter for a core and they are different lenghts than the 727 i think.

Yeah, a manual valve body may be a little excessive, i would be fine without it. Maybe i will just rebuild it with a shift kit and call it good. I can always pull the pan and change the valve body later on.

I did plan to plumb in a trans cooler i have out of a jeep wagoneer also. No fried trannys for me..Wink

It looks like a+a has good prices, i probably will give them a call, he will know exaclty what i need.

Jeepjerry, I am running a fresh stock 727 behind my mild 401 (432 HP/ 461 ft/lbs) with an A+A manual reverse valve body... it is a blast to drive with that valve body!!! Call Rick, tell him what you got and what your using it for, he is a very honest guy and wont try and push a Sale on you....
