(though not electrical, the speedometer is in the TSM Electrical section, i guess because it's the next door neighbor to electrics in the instrument panel? lol)

the speedometer in my '68 American is demented, the flying magnet thingie wobbles due to wear, and occasionally scuffs the aluminum cup, whacking the pointer past 120. sometimes it parks itself at "30" when stopped, and a jostle of the panel drops it to zero. so i bought another speedo head (OUCH) that's a lot less experienced than mine.

not in the TSM is how to set the odometer to an arbitrary value. i think i can guess: the high end of the odo axle is held in a U slot with a spring. i assume i release that spring wire and rotate? anything i shoudl know? do parts fly all over the room?

Nothing should go flying. Release the retaining clip and tilt it out.
Make sure you align the tabs between each row of numbers as you drop it back in.

OK thanks. of course i couldn't really wait and lifted the bail off the cast frame; it hits the riveted-on speedo card.  dropped it back down (not gonna start at dinner time!). i'll make a hook tool from wire and lift off the axle end tomorrow.

done. there was no way to get the wire bail out without destroying it, as it simply hit the dial card. odd.

washed the digits clean at least. odo seems to work.

made a new "bail" out of some stainless wire. it;s not rocket science in there (except the eddy-current cup thing is pretty cool).
