My 69 Javelin needs a new roof due to corrosion from a previous vinyl top. I found a replacement roof and have it here at home. It has been some time since I removed the old roof so I am not certain about what the factory used, if anything, between the roof supports and the roof skin. I do not have a parts book. My choices seem to be: Nothing, just prime and paint both surfaces (roof supports and underside of the roof skin) Body adhesive. Seam sealer or something similar. What do forum members recommend? Of course the previous spot welds and the edges and c-pillar have been drilled and will be replaced. Joe ------------- Happiness is making something out of nothing. |

Joe, the roof to A & C-pillar supports were bare metal and spot welded and then leaded. The inside metal was lucky if it got any overspray. ------------- Mike |

Thanks Mike. Oh I know that. The former spot welds will all be replaced with plug welds and the spot welds in the rain gutters will be redone as well. What I am asking about is the center supports across the roof.[under the roof skin). We cleaned these supports to bare metal and sprayed them with epoxy primer long ago so I don't recall if there was a residue of some sort of body sealer there or not. It doesn't seem right to just primer or paint them and not close any gaps between the roof skin and the supports with something. Joe ------------- Happiness is making something out of nothing. |

Joe, the roof support was spot welded to the sides but there was a glob (front and back) of sound deadener or adhesive in the middle of the roof support between the support and the roof sheet metal. This negated the tinny sound if the roof was pounded on. ------------- Mike |

I would put a bead of body caulk on the supports to help detent the roof vibrating on the road going over bumps ------------- 69 amx 290 auto 65 220 290 4spd 80 ford fairmont |

I used seam sealer usually, but over the years I've tried everything from great stuff foam to structural adhesive. ------------- 66 American SW, 66 American 2dr, 82 J10, 70 Hornet, Pound, Va. |
