Just bought a 73 Javelin.  I noticed the power steering pump is leaking.  Anyone know a good place to buy a new replacement?

Thanks,

Matt

That should be an easy one to get at your local NAPA. It's a Saginaw pump.

Where is it leaking? Most of the time is just an O ring around the pump housing, or front seal that are pretty easy and cheap to replace. Even if you change the pump you still have to swap the pulley. You can rent the pulley puller for free at most auto parts stores.

Thanks.  I bet it is the O ring and/or the pump housing but I have never messed with power steering components.  Thought it may simply be easier to replace the whole unit if they are reasonably priced.  But since I have to pull it anyway, I may tinker around and learn.

So if you don't want to mess with it, just make sure you get the Saginaw pump WITH reservoir, otherwise you have to swap yours and that is most likely source of leak.   Kits are cheap and easy to fix on that pump....there are two styles....one with not holding pulley on and one that the pulley presses on....pulleys do not interchange so just make sure you get right pump if you are going to replace......kit is the same for either.

Just because you buy a new or reman doesn't mean it's good nowadays. Angry If yours doesn't make noise and it just leaks, it's worth the cost of a seal kit in my book. There's really nothing to them.

Thank you Ross and Keith.  I think I will attempt to repair it and will check which kind of pump/pulley I have.  It does not make noise.  Pictures below:

Hmm, to me it looks like a reman pump with those ink marks on it and the reservoir doesn't look like it's on the pump square. I'd have to look at another one to be sure. In either case the pulley doesn't have to come in order to take the reservoir off. Pull the pump off and remove the big line adapter - be aware that it's spring loaded with the relief behind it. Remove the other bolts and then gently tap the reservoir off.

Thanks.  I believe you're right.  It's a reman.  I think the outside pulley groove is for smog stuff that has been somewhat dismantled.  Next stop, get a TSM for the car.  I would like to get rid of the smog stuff and I guess that means trying to find earlier (71 or 72?) freeflow exhaust manifolds.  Or I've heard some guys have installed Pertronix exhaust manifolds without all the smog junk.  Right now the smog stuff looks like a rat's nest to me.

I have decided to completely replace the power steering pump.  I don't want to mess with replacing seals on this remain pump.  It seems like it was a cheap replacement by the PO.  Anyone have good luck with a specific brand replacement pump for a 73 Javelin?  I have also read older threads describing the PITA regarding finding a pump that properly fits the existing brackets (if I read it correctly).  Also, is it a good idea to replace the pump input and output lines at the same time just to be safe?  Seems they have been on the car for a very long time although they don't seem to be leaking from the naked eye.

Thanks,

Matt
