I am converting my 72 javelin from manual to power steering. I have ordered two powersteering pumps and neither have worked. One had the wrong inlet/ outlet orientation and the other the studs were to short and the neck was to long for my stock water pump and crank pulleys. Napa dose not have one period. I have a 74 304 with the standard amc power steering brackets for the Saginaw pump. Does any body know were or who has one? Or will I be making my own brackets? What am I missing here?

The standard Saginaw brackets will work on any V-8. The pumps/pulleys are different. Up thru 74, they used a pulley that was held in place with a nut, after that, it's a press fit. All used the same brackets. I have a pre-75 Saginaw pump on my 69 AMX and it fits and aligns correctly. If you get a pre-74 pump and have the correct pulley, it should work.

Wha? You have a 74 304 installed in your 72, right?
There is differences between early 72 and 74 on pulleys and brackets. If by chance you kept the 74 water pump with its pulley you would need to go with a 73 on up Sagnaw pump and bracket. If mixing pulleys or water pump, it would make sense on your issues. |

I have a 74 block in a 72. I also have the later style pump brackets. The water pump measures 3" so it should be the short, the other pump I have is 3.75 . So everything lines up with exception of the two pumps I ordered. I just found a 3rd option pump at Oriellys and ordered it. They were the only ones who had one available so Ill see how it fits..... I was just surprised to have this much difficulty finding the correct pump. It would be nice to move to a more available pump and I was wondering if any one here had a swap with a part number.

72 also has the 3 bolt pulley on the harmonic balancer, 73-74 has the 4 bolt pulley, and they are different.

Yes that is true, but I verified a while back a 3 bolt aligns with a 4 bolt if swapping, and as of recent Sceneone, on his build, used a new aftermarket 4 bolt harmonic balancer and pulley with his existing 71 setup with no issues. The only issue swapping 3 bolt to 4 bolt can be the need to rebalance the harmonic balancer depending on 390 to 401 and early flange to late flange crank end. Since we are talking 72 on up, no need to worry about such a thing. |

So I have the 4 bolt crank pulley does that mean I have the long water Pump? I did not do the engine swap so I have no idea what parts got exchanged. I just remember about 15 years ago we replaced the water pump and the first one we tried had a belt alignment problem and we ended up with the one that is on there now. I just do not remember the specifics. I do know that the power steering pumps I have tried have basicaly 1 belt width to long using the later model bracket I have. I'm in to deep now one way or the other I'll get one in there!

Long pump goes to deep pump pulley. Short pump goes to shallow pulley. Properly matched pump and pulley will align with both 3 bolt and 4 bolt damper pulley.
As long as you have the proper pump pulley that was made for the pump, it does not matter for your config. If by chance you added shims or washers to help align alternator or push out the crank pulley, they will need to be removed. I have a picture of a 71 shallow pulley for short pump. Will post it once I locate it in my photos. Here is what the short pump pulley looks like. Edited by 304-dude - Jan/21/2017 at 10:24am |

You could go with the bracket that Control Freak sells (www.freakride.com) and convert to a GM type II pump. That's the direction I'm going on my 67.
