I just replaced the steering gear in my 1970 Rebel with a remanufactured one from Lares.  the replacement was exactly the same as I had in the car.  The steering pump was not touched.  After the install I do not have power steering.  The car behaves like it has manual steering.  Could I have overlooked something in the installation?  Are there any adjustments that I did not notice?  Any advice would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Why did you replace the steering gear?

I felt the steering was too loose.  The thing would float down the road.  When talking to other owners they claimed they should handle tighter than mine did.

Did you put fluid in it?

Did you bleed the system for air? Turn the wheel to full stop both ways a few times.

Went back to it today to see if i missed anything obvious.  At idle I do not have much power assist.  When I rev the motor, it behaves normally, and the steering wheel spins freely.  Will it work its way out.  I plan on taking on a drive this afternoon to see if it gets any better.

I bet there's a billion tiny bubbles in the fluid (aeration),
look for weeping fluid around the connections as well,
sometimes a loose connection can keep adding air to the system.

If everything is tight,
make sure the fluid is full (but not over full),
let it sit till the bubbles are mostly gone,
then cycle cycle cycle it.

Sometimes it just takes a while to get all the air out.

That is exactly it. I cannot get the pressure line where it connects to the steering gear to stop leaking. It is very small but bubbles when I rev the motor. I will grab another line.

Is it possible to use a tread tape that is fuel, fluid resistant on this connection?

You can, but it should be a flare fitting. You can get gas resistant teflon tape from Lowe's and such. Now that is Natural/LP gas, but should also be gasoline and oil resistant.
