One thing top keep in mind...I have an esab plasma cutter and it will work on 220 single phase or 480 3 phase....the latter being what you would need to cut 1"...I have not had a need to cut anything over 1/2" with mine so I have always used it 220...

Put electronics on a UPS.......... the off-line type. They run the equipment from the battery and use AC only to keep the battery charged.
There's a reason for low price. Yeah, you can get "cheap stuff" - but ever wonder "how'd they do that"?  ??
There's reasons and like said in another thread here - just because the same company makes two "brands" or lines, and one line is sold in a discount store, that doesn't mean they have the same guts inside!!!
That's a fact - those discounters can supply their own specs, specify lesser quality electronics inside, etc.
Two nearly identical washing machines sitting across the aisle from each other at Sears. One has a really nice solid sounding door on the front, reminds me of a Mercedes when you close the door. The other sounds more tinny, the fit just doesn't feel right.
Same company made them........... in different plants to different specs. Guess which was made in Germany and which in Mexico?
Even items coming off the same line - does matter, can have different specs, different internals. Sears for example has Whirlpool make some of their stuff - at the SAME factory as the Whirlpool brand, but in many cases, Sears, of all folks, have TIGHTER specs!
Same for lawn mowers - the company Dad worked for made Sears Craftsman lawn equipment and thier own line as well as making mowers for discounters like Alco, etc. - guess who had the tighter specs? Sears! They even came through and inspected the line from time to time - and at one point said that since my Dad moved up to be the inspector of their line, their quality was up, so to get the contract renewed for making Sears equipment, they had to agree Dad would be the top quality control person on the Craftsman line. Sears was that picky that they even could specifiy who the chief inspector was, same factory, Sears had tighter specs.
So be careful buying stuff that looks the same but is $500 less. Yeah, at times it's simply the rules of volume purchasing - big money, big orders talk so they can sell cheaper and make it up in volume, but be sure of it............

Sears...hmmm...I can't tell you how many blade shafts that I have had to put on my mom's 42 inch cut rider...and belts, well lets not say how great those overpriced Sears brand belts and how long they don't even last...not one season.

I would have to say a namebrand is the best way to go on a plasma cutter. hypertherm 30 and 45 are great models that are extremely portable but are 1100 and 1500. The better the quality and plus your skills then the cheaper the consumables will be on you. What ever that you get then price the consumables are for a cheapy if that is your route and how long they will be available since if there are no consumables then you will be back to old school tools.

Look on Craigslist and rummage sales.

I picked up a Lincoln Procut 55 for $40 at a rummage sale.  No joke.
I'll never forget that day. Seen an ad in the paper for a rummage sale that had tools listed.
Usually that means a rake or a shovel.  Anyways I stopped at it after picking up my boy from basketball. I seen it and the price and about S*it myself.
I made the woman call her husband and confirm the price.  He said that was correct.
She said well it really wasn't used much and works fine.  I was like OK then I guess.

I felt dirty but what was I to do?
I spent more for supplies to wire it to the garage(50amps) than on the machine.
