the 360 I bought came witha auto trans. I know there is not supposed to be a pilot bearing in the crank, but it sure looks like it has! It's brass. Did some come with one?? it's a 71 . I thought I would ask b/4 I try to take it out. What is the best way to take it out? thanks

A good way to remove the pilot bushing is with grease. Pack the cavity in the crank with grease, then insert a steel rod through the bushing and hit it with a hammer. The hydraulic pressure will pop out the bushing

Option #2,

Local tool rental place should offer a slick pilot bushing puller removal tool.
Take crank with you and save time and a return trip.
Takes 1 minute, less messy than grease.
Grease method requires a "punch" with a decent fit in the bushing I.D.

I haven't tried it myself but I've been told you can wet newspaper & wad it up in crank cavity with same results as grease

Guys, I think you missed the first point of the question. He's asking if the pilot bushing should be there, and it's a 71 engine with an automatic, so it would be a Borg-Warner. B/W torque converters use a pilot bushing to align the converter with the crank. If he's installing a manual tranny, he'll need a pilot bushing too. If he's switching to a TH400 or 904/998/727, then he needs to do something about the crank flange.......

If it needs a new bushing (and with the auto trans it shouldn't) then your advise is spot-on! BTW, they also make inside pullers for this too...

If the 360 came with a Borg Warner Auto, then it is a '71 or older motor.
The crank butt flange is different than '72 & up, it's flat, no locator pilot ring,
and the hole in the crank butt flange is smaller than '72 & up.

Borg Warner Converters had a long, small diameter crank pilot on front.
I myself am not clear on specifics of fitting a manual trans these cranks.
The BW converter pilot does look similliar to a manual trans input shaft pilot.
Do you have a manul trans ? measure shaft pilot & BW converter pilot ?
Neither am I clear on fitting '72 & up flywheels to BW style cranks.
Both have been discussed here somewhere.
It may be that '72 & up trans and flywheels bolt right up to BW cranks.
Once determined, this would be good info to post in Tech Docs section.

Cool

I know you guys helped me out with the flywheel stuff a few weeks ago! Finally found a 71 manual flywheel for my 71 360. I checked the fit and that's when I noticed the pilot bushing in there. The flywheel fits fine. I don't have the trans yet, so maybe I should wait till I do b/4 I  pull it out!  It came with a B-W auto and that's why I was suprised to see the bushing.

the 67-72 Parts book lists only 1 bushing for the crank from 67-71. It also does not specify manual or auto tranny. Based on this info, you should not need to change the bushing unless it's actually broken. In the auto tranny application, the converter pilot stub does not spin in the bushing at all like the pilot stub on a manual tranny input shaft, as the converter turns the same speed as the flex plate/crank, so there should be no wear on it.
