I'm not a body and paint gut but have wondered, when you spray the engine bay, inside of trunk lid, door jams etc. Is it just a matter of spraying a smooth coat of paint to get it too look good? I don't see how you sand and/or buff these ares? What the process and in what order do you paint?
Thanks, Ken

There are enough creases and bends in that metal that it is easy to blast without damage. I have done it a couple of times with used glass beads but they get everywhere and are hard to clean up. I have also done it with a die grinder and 3M surface conditioning discs (like Scotch Brite). That will strip it easily and in the crevices but you will have to spend a few bucks to get enough discs.
Sometimes I just hand sand the jambs. After it is stripped, prime and paint it. I use single stage paint under the hood because clear coat is too hard and sometimes a piece will crack and break off when bolting something down. I have done it with wiring in the car, by pulling it back and covering it. Without some type of prep, I would not expect to get a lasting paint job. |

There is such a thing as hand rubbing paint, but if you're a half decent painter you can get single stage paint to flow out acceptable. And if it doesn't, you can sand the areas that don't suit you with very fine paper ( 1200- 1500 even 2000 grit ) and hand rub it back into gloss .
Or if you're not into hand rubbing they make tiny little buffing pads, I've seen down to 1 inch diameter , for removing very small defects, without disturbing the rest of the paint. But you'd better be very careful with those small pads around all the beads and creases under a hood, or firewall. Do under the hood, trunk, door jambs, first, and tape it off very carefully, back taping, or using dart tape to give no paint edge at the openings.

Ok, so it's just a matter of using the right kind of paint and spraying it smooth and a little wet.
it will look good especially for a daily driver. I'm looking at car with most of the body work done, But was hoping to pull the motor later and spray the engine compartment. Can i pull the fenders at that time, mask off and paint those areas then? Ken

Forum member Bruce Carothers (AMXTSY) repainted his engine bay with the engine in the car and it looks gorgeous. He won the Teague award with that car last year, so that tells you how nice it looks. That's inspired me to do the same with mine, though I can certainly understand those who would rather just pull the engine and be done with it.

I had everything removed from my engine compartment except for the steering shaft. I didn't want to have the steering column taken out as it would really add to the interior removal and it is mint.
Once all the stuff is out, they taped off the fenders and media blasted the engine compartment. Cleaned it up afterwords by hand and did a detail sand and fill on some items I wanted taken care of. They then primed it used the same top coat paint they used on my hood. The results were great. If you got a daily driver, this may not be the route you want to go, but if you have all the stuff out, why not get it done so you don't have to do it again? Steve original owner 1971 Javelin AMX |

I reduced the paint according to the manufacturers spec's for the first one or two coats. Then for the last coat (top coat) I used paint that has been reduced another 50% over the spec's.
