Hey Guys,
Doing my first oil change on my '66 (Straight 6/199) this weekend and have a question on oil type. 10w30 (non synthetic) seems to be the one to use, but I don't know what the previous Owner was using. Will it be an issue if I just go with the non synthetic from this point on? Thanks, aK |

I use Walmart blue jugs of non-synthetic 10W-40 in all my old cars. It is now certified as SM, which is about 10 generations better than the oil our cars were designed to use. 10W-30 will work well, too, especially in colder climates.

Yeah modern 10w30 or 10w40 would work better than original oil, so either would be fine.

all modern oils are so much better than the old days! there's a lot of controversy about oils and i don't want to add to it, but the upshot is, decent quality and frequent changes and you're fine. modern oils don't have zinc (ZDDP) additives any more but consensus seems to be, once an engine is broken in, the lack thereof doesn't hurt longevity.
some people claim that switching an old engine to synthetics loosens up lots of gunk, but that's anecdotal, i've personally seen no evidence tho i'm not doubting it either. if you do a rebuild, then it's totally worth switching to synthetics, they are vastly superior. for large-clearance engines like ours, Mobil 1's 15W-50 is designed for them, is more or less equivelant to regular 10W-30, and actually has some ZDDP in it. NAPA carries it. some people run certain diesel oils that still contain zinc. Rebuilds need a serious zinc additive to break in flat-tappet cams and lifters. |

I run 10w30 in mine. Usually, I run full synthetic but I have switched between the two and there isn't any problem doing that. It's also no problem switching between brands.
Synthentic's do tend to clean up sludge better than dino oil but I've only seen warnings about it with super sludgey engines. The only other "issue" with synthetics is that they creep better than most dino oil so you're more likely to have leaks on engines with older gaskets.
As far as ZDDP goes, outside of cam break-in it's only an issue on engines that use stiff valve springs and flat tappet lifters or where you run high RPM for extended periods of time. AMC sixes don't have stiff valve springs (especially when they're 46 years old) and it's pretty hard to get a stock one to spin up much over 4000 RPM on the highway so it really isn't an issue for normal driving.
There are ZDDP additives you can buy if it makes you fell better but if you're really concerned about it, there are still oils available that have the same zinc levels used in the 60's and 70's. There's a lot of science in oil forumlation and too much of an addittive can cause as many problems as not enough so it's really better to buy an oil that's been properly forumalted than to dump some snake oil in the crank case and hope. Joe Gibbs is one source for it and I think there's an AMC vendor that sells their own branded oil.
