Anyone use a Melling pickup? Bought a new one for my engine but it seems like it's too long. Oil pan rocks a little with no gasket. How much clearance should there be between the bottom of the sump and the bottom of the pickup?

Pretty tight now. Not sure if I can get another rev. Did you compare the length to your old one. Mine was 1/8 longer and the pickup wasn't parallel to the oil pan rail.

Did you put a button on the bottom. I use a 1/4" nut and bolt. Lock tight. Trim for length. Without it, the pickup will suck into the bottom. Set the distance about 3/8"

Maybe you didn't notice his problem -
it's not whether or not to use a spacer or about sucking up the pan, it's that the pan hits the oil pickup, holding the pan up from the block (or down from the block depending on how his engine is sitting right now)
A spacer isn't going to solve that. In fact it would be a bandaid on a problem of an ill-fitting oil pickup.
I have had to bend new oil pickup tubes before to get a good fit. I use strip caulk or some sort of putty to ensure I have the clearance I want (not much, but enough).
The pan should sit against the block squarely if everything fits well. And that's with no gasket. With a gasket it should have roughly the correct spacing up (and yes, do use a nylon spacer or whatever the new pickup came with, or rig something to keep a space between oil pickup screen and pan)

Good info all. I did put a wrench on it and got another turn on it. Took some better measurements and have 3/16 without the gasket. Seemed ok.
