All the filters I have seen for it are about the same diameter: about 1/2 inch bigger than the filter sealing flange. Not going to get much smaller than that. I actually can't run some of the biggest filters because of the angle of the filter flange and the location of the motor mount.

The filter that I was refering to is about 3" Dia. and is used on 84-86 full size Jeeps with V8's as well as some 82-86 AMC 6 Cyl's.

My K&N's have never given me a problem with drainback and noisy starts.

The Napa Gold 1258 is fixed. I tested about 12 of them on the shelf and all sealed perfectly.

I have not checked the other filters made by Wix, but since they make the Napa Gold, I assume they are all fixed as well.

I use the small diameter NAPA 1522 filter on the 401 in my Rambler. It's about the same diameter as the flange on the filter adapter. The car has a non-factory alternator and there isn't enough clearance with the stock filter. It seems to work really well, at the time I went to that filter I also changed to 20W50 Valvoline VR-1 Racing Oil (still the same weight I had been using) and gained about 5lbs of pressure across the board.

My NAPA usually only stocks 2 of a lot of filters. I wonder how long I'll have to wait till their warehouse is out of the junk ones, like the one I put on my car. What a POS filter.

Just ran across this.
I put a K&N on my 4.7L Grand Cherokee.
It rattled when cold, no other filter ever did this and I will not be spending that kind of money on a pretty filter to listen to valve rattle Angry

I run Puralator Pureones exclusively on cars I care about.

The 98 Altima is hammered and it gets whatever is on sale, unless it is Fram.

Thanks for pulling this thread back up as I need a filter for the American!
