Is there a modern cheap gear reduction starter thats a close fit? My starter broke and im either going to rebuild or replace.

Not that I know of. A good stock starter with a good battery and cables should easily spin up a 196. I've never had an issue with a starter -- except for one of the above being bad. Make sure there is a good ground strap or cable from the block to the body also.

The bendix drive on mine broke. I found new drive nos on e bay. The one napa lists is wrong. On my 64 dart /6 motor i upgraded to nee style starter and it was cheaper and ig cranks allot better than stock one ever did.

Replaced the Benedict on my 62 last year. After a lot of research found this to be the correct part:

why a reduction starter? the stock one is great (if it's in good shape).

it's got to be a common starter -- i know for certain that it is exactly the same item that fits into an Atomic 4 boat engine.

there;'s no overall quality issue or sizing with it. the usual wears out -- nose bushing, commutator and brushes, bearings etc. disassemble, swap parts, reassemble.

reminds me i should order rebuild parts for mine before it fails.
