I lube the Bowl Screw nylon gasket and threads with wd-40 and tighten'em down
equally in steps using a 5/16 nut driver to a pretty wrist tight feel.
Bowl & Block gaskets compress and go by the fully compressed feel.

I followed your advice....bolts tightned, no leaks. New fuel pressure gauge reads 6psi. Now I need to correctly adjust the primary float bowl I think.... tried to fire it up. After pumping the gas pedal and about 6 engine cranks got impatient. Held it to the floor and she spit a big 'ol flame through the carb.   Think I'll check the spark too just to be sure.

Trying not to get frustrated, 6 weeks ago car was running fine.

Takes a few cranks to fill the fuel bowl or bowls, then I use my hand to actuate the
accelerator pump arms to fill the pump chambers, fuel will squirt out of the squirters when full.
Crank it a couple more times but don't start it, then get out and look in the carb bores
to make sure no fuel is dripping from the boosters inidicating a too high or stuck float.
Then try and crank the engine and start it.

If the pump chambers weren't full when ya started it, that mighta caused the "flame out".

Might be why it's not firing up, I think the plugs are fouled out.  Top plug is one I pulled.  Bottom is a lightly used plug.

That top plug does look like it is running rich. I would throw in a new set of plugs because even ones that look like the bottom one may not fire, ask how I know Confused
Once you have it running make sure the float level is not too high and the choke is pulling off all the way. You may want to adjust the choke so it does not come on so it will not foul the plugs from that till you can get it straighten out and running right.

Well, now I gotta' ask.....how do you know it may not fire?   Sounds like there could be an interesting story there.

i was using autolite's in my car and every once in a while it would foul a plug, most of the time #4. i went to champions and haven't had the problem since.

just food for thought!

My 70 Javelin street car project had to run to move it if need be. I could never get the Holley carb to idle right even after rebuilding it. It was like it had a vacuum leak but from inside the carb and ran lean. Well needed to move the car and it had a miss and would back fire out the tail pipes when the RPM went up. Because the car sits for a long time between runs I was thinking stuck valve(s).  More checking and I found some of the header pipes cold to the touch. Plugs looked new, like out of the box new so knew the carb was lean. Some more checking I had compression so not a valve(s). Installed new plugs and it was now firing on all 8 and no backfiring out the tail pipes.

So just because the plugs look new/good don’t mean they fire like new/good. I think they were Champions and think I have 5/8 (because of headers) AC in it now. And yes the carb has been replaced and the new one works great.

That's my story and I am sticking to it Big smile

Replaced the plugs (AC Delco....it's what the local NAPA had) and finally got 'er to fire up again. Ran like crap, real rough just like before. So after confirming fuel pressure is good (6psi), spark is good, I really think we're down to the carb as the only possibility. My brother is much more experienced the tuning carbs so I may have to ask him back over to help. I may replace the powervalve once more as the I've been told the No. 1 way those get ruined is when a carb spits a flame.
