Topic: No Fuel at pump.Posted: Aug/16/2012 at 8:27am |

Recently i purchased a 65 rambler 770 with the 232. The fuel pump went out on me not long after having the vehicle and i replaced with an inline electrical pump for the time being since the mechanical pump is so difficult to find or afford. While i replaced the fuel pump and cleaned the fuel line and dropped the fuel tank and cleaned the tank. When i put the tank back in the vehicle i have fuel at the fuel pump. I dropped the tank again and verfied the fuel lines were still free flowing. with the tank on the ground fuel will flow from the tank. I removed the components in the tank and verified they were installed properly and reinstalled components. Fuel still flowing from the tank but when put back in the car no fuel flows. Does anyone have any ideas or advice to repiar this issue? Any and all help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Where did you install the electric fuel pump?
Electric pumps need to be close as possible to the tank. The flexible hose near the tank may be getting pinched.

The pump is on the rf strut tower by the line on the frame. Also the hose in the back righoff the tank is new. I can pull the fuel line right at the tank and I get no fuel.

Are you sure the flexible hose isn't getting squeezed shut between the top of the tank and the body?
How is the tank vented ? Take the gas cap off, see if you get fuel. |

It's a steel line from the tank to the rubber hose I replaced. Also have tried with cap off also to no avail.

I have seen rubber hose, when you push it over the metal line, scrape part of the rubber off the inside of the rubber hose, blocking the line, or acting like a check valve.

Yes, what he said! *occasionally* they will suck (eg mounted under-hood) if there's wetness in the pump to create an initial vacuum but they dont work that way. Also electric pumps often generate too much pressure for carbs, so you'll likely need a regulator (3 - 4 lbs is enough).
Recall how the feed fom the tank goes... the pickup is on the floor of the tank, then it goes up to the top of the tank, adn the hose drops down, etc. So if the hose and pickup are full of air, yes, nothing will come out. But if the line is full of fuel with no air -- eg. a normal situation when pump etc has been working and THEN you pull the hose off -- the hose and pickup will SIPHON gas out, even though the hose goes up and over the top. You'll have to suck on it and risk a mouthful of gasoline, or make other arrangement to draw fuel from it. If you blow into the hose, it should not be much of a restriction, and if your 40 year old gas tank is filled with rust and debris (VERY COMMON!) then blowing will clear the crap from the (probably plugged up) pickup sock/screen adn it'll work fo ra while, until crap settles around it again. At 40, gas tanks often need dropping and cleaning out, at least, and hope you don't have rust-through etc. Crud-filled gas tanks are a very common cause of fuel delivery problems in cars of our vintage. As are, of course, old cracked diaphragm pumps... |

I had an electric pump under the hood of my Jeep and it worked until the engine got hot and it vapor locked. Moved it back by the tank and it never vapor locked again. It did pump fuel when it was under the hood, though.
