The solinoid is shot on the GM style starter on the 69 gladiator
I brought it to shop. I'm not sure if I should replace it with a Prestolite and scrap the GM and mount the solinoid on the wheel well. any thoughts?

You've been having lots of issues with this. Is the solenoid an external module that is physically separated from the starter? It's a shame you can't pick an integrated starter since it's less wires, less work and less heat to worry about, though I have similar worries concerning my front diff. I'm using an ordinary 4.0L starter on my Eagle's stroker with the T-5 and link bar and finished retrofitting a MPFI harness to seat properly while I decide what to do with the wires that went to a +12v fuse rail next to the starter.

The early inline engines had the starter in a really stupid place. Would you be able to swap in a modern 258/4.0L or does that stir an entire universe of problems?

I found this alternative on Ebay. Does anyone have any first hand knowledge of these high torque starters?

A pre-72 reduction starter? You would no longer be dealing with that inertia technology of the previous starter and you would need to relocate and truncate some wires. Outside of that this looks great. I have a 4.0L starter on my 4L stroker and am keeping a DynaForce high torque starter in queue for when it fails, similar to this high torque model.

HELP! The rebuild shop tried to find me an new replacement starter without success. They replaced the solenoid. I installed the starter and it still clicks intermittently and now there's a rumbling noise as I turn the motor over. I stopped turning over the motor before I could start it. The top bolt on the starter is not the easiest to get at but I guess it has to come out again

Does anyone have a solution ?

External solenoid Delco starter on the driver side of the car?  You are using two correct shoulder bolts to fasten it in?   I probably have ten of those starters laying on a shelf.  If you can send me a picture to confirm, you can have one for the cost of postage.   Joe

The truck only had one shoulder bolt on the driver side starter. PM your email so I can send a picture. I'm not sure why its worse than before the new solenoid was installed.

'grumbling' is not a solenoid problem. joe's point is important -- gear mesh is determined by using the correct AMC factory shoulder bolts. they really matter. they're a close fit.
