So there should be good electrical contact between the sender and the ring, and the ring and the tank. My point being, that you should be able to get away with just grounding the tank.

In the corners of my tank where the two halves are joined, it's apparent that there's metal extending beyond the crimping that holds the two halves together. You could drill through that material and attached a wire there with a screw without fear of causing a leak.

Absolutely - should work. Not as perfect as the original wire bonded to the sending unit but unless there's a lot of corrosion........ that ring has pretty good pressure against the sending unit AND tank. The corners are large, you can go in a quarter inch or a bit less from a large corner and drill and use a small screw. Heck, they ground the other end to the chassis with a screw!

I use Permatex to on the ring to ensure corrosion resistance and electrical connection. Bonus is it's much easier to take apart later if the sender needs replacement.
Also ground the tank separately with a wire/screw through the seam outside the weld on the tank. It gets a coat of Permatex also.
Maybe over done but don't like rework.
