Need Some Info On My 65 American Transmission

Ok i just got a few weeks ago a 65 american  with the 196 and auto i'm sure its just the norm 3 speed
My question is what model is it and is there any info on them?

Your tranny should be the Borg-Warner M-35 air cooled aluminum which was used from 1957 to 1965.

You must have one of the last 196's in a 65 American because one I saw had the 232 in it.

The TSM has a good section on rebuilding that transmission.

I put in a used one about 30 years ago and other than a bit of a leak at the selector shaft it is still doing its job well.

In '65, you could have a flathead 196(base model 220), a standard OHV 196(only year for full flow oil filter), or the 232(not available with AC).

raysinvegas, I see you have five AMC's. If I ever get a second garage built maybe I'll get another. That 65 with the 232 in it I sure hated to see stripped and off to the junk yard. As I recall it didn't even have any rust in it.

My Car is a 196 base no radio or cig lighter  But it does still have the a/c under the dash 
Also it has the 2bbl Carb on it?

In 1965, the 195.6 flathead was standard in all but the 440 hardtop which came standard with the OHV 195.6.

My 65 has the 195.6 ohv but its a 220

Whoever originally ordered the car went for the OHV option or the original flat-head was swapped out somewhere in its lifespan.
