I gotta think that 4* is way low.  I know on my 75 258, it was dangerously slow till i upped the static timing , and mixed in looser springs in advance.  Your advance is pre smog era and probably are good for performance/economy provided they arnt stuck/bindy.  Also keep in mind, ethanol is ruining everyones mpg, and its more prevalent than ever.
75 gremlin x, jeep 4L headed 258,Clifford cam, intake,header. 390 holley. I want a 282 VAM motor!

AC/PS/PDB.

72 AMX , 304 2bbl, 3speed, now disks...probably will sell, want an automatic /AC.

That 10% ethanol isn't creating any spectacular losses.

Mom's Caddy has a mileage computer. 10% ethanol just started to be common here in SC around the beginning of summer. The Caddy dropped 0.5 mpg on average since they've been running 10%. It might have a bit more sophisticated ECU than others, but I can't see more than a 1 mpg drop even with a carburetor -- not just due to the fuel. At least the fuel system should be cleaner!

I have a 2002 saturn that I drive to work. I can tell if it's ethanol or not by my milage.I lose 2mpg with ethanol, period. Granted I'm getting 40mpg with non-ethanol,so 38 might seem trivial, but I don't like to run it if I can help it.

my 65 American Wagon with a 2-bbl and 232 runs great and I can only get around 145 miles out of 14 gallons or so (I never take the tank down all the way). I don't know what else I can do. As I said, the car runs great, actually purrs. I live with this low mileage. At least it's only $20 to fill it now.

You can tune a WCD carb by using different "throttle rods".  I think the same parts fit the Edelbrock knockoffs of the Carter AFB and the Carter AFB itself.  Again, I think you can order a tuing kit from Edelbrock which has a selection of rods.  The change in diameter of the rods over their length determines how much fuel is fed through the carb jets.   If I ever use a WCD carb I intend to try tuning it.  I have a wide band oxygen sensor that I can use too.  Joe

That's a 5% drop. What's the difference in the fuel price?

4 degrees is WAY too low. Try 12 at idle, and 36-38 at 300rpm and up. That will net you about 15hp ad a considerable amount of mileage.
setting guys out by car lengths....

So 67 American , did you ever set timing up?  Have you checkd function of mechanical advance?  Ive seen a scenario of a hot rodded car being slow because the weights were overly loose causing the static timing to have to be set too low.  My Grem always amazes me at its city mpg /hiway is only ok.

alright, I am running rich (I think). I could smell gas in the oil recently and have a lot of white smoke on start up.
Is that carb or timing or a combination of things?
