I know you are talking 401 but here's my super tune story from the 90's.
I had a stock 1974 Matador with a 360 2 barrel.
I raced my friends 80's 5.0 HO Mustang. He mopped up the highway with me.
I went home that weekend and did a cheap rings, bearings and gasket rebuild with a Cam Dynamics cam I thing .477/.484 lift, home ported 291C heads, Offenhauser dual port spread bore with a 600 Holley double pumper.
Everything else was stock even down to the points.
When I went back to work on Monday, we raced again and I cleaned his clock bad.
Then I went on vacation and another guy started working there. He had and Irock Z Camaro. When I came back to work,I beat him several times just as bad.
All on 87 octane.
Same engine later when I moved back to Minnesota, I put it in my 1969 AMX temporarily and raced a 440 Super Bee and stayed right with him the whole race.
