Greetings, Has anyone gone this route? Ive exhausted search for OEM replacement spiders, side gears and cones for early two piece TwinGrip mod 20 carriers. Dr Differential claims the power-lok assy will fit properly in housing. It is slightly shorter than OEM so they offer .020 clutch shims to maintain full plate grab. Side gears are 30 spline Mopar only so axles are needed. The only possible issue is the 30 spline axle not clearing the carrier holes but he doubts it. It would be pretty simple to open up the holes if needed. The clutch plate splines are same as OEM too. He went on to explain the basic differences in the assys design allowing full axle spline engagement vs 1/2 spline area in the OEM design thru the side gears. I start thinking you never get something for nothing but looking at the components there is a difference as the cones are splined. Take a look at images here: http://www.doctordiff.com/powr-lok-internal-parts-kit.html Axle wise not same as Moser. Sealed bearings made by Green Bearing press on from outside with brake support plate, thrust block button is eliminated, no end play adjusting. Id like opinions or personal experiences before I pull trigger on this one. Henry

Just because MOPAR bought AMC does not mean their parts work in our AMC cars.
I did not see anything on their web site that they do anything AMC. Check out DTS http://www.drivetrainspecialists.com/ as they know AMC. I bought a Detroit locker, 4.56 gears and install kit for my 70 AMC 20 rear for the drag car. I have also used them for other carriers, gears and install kits for GM trucks and they always came thru. Dave ---- edit: when I did the drag car rear I also added Moser axles. |

It would not surprise me that the Mopar parts for the Dana-Spicer Traction-Loc would fit the AMC carrier. That unit was used by GM, Chrysler and others over the years. When "posi-traction" differentials were first offered as options in the late 1950s, many of the auto manufacturers bought the differentials from Dana-Spicer. The units were all from the same basic design and many of the specifications were the same so some components were interchangeable, like plates, pinions gears, shafts, etc. Years ago, a trick for drag racers was to use the Mopar innerds in the Chevrolet pumpkin rear end that was used from 1955-1964. By using the Mopar side gears in the Chevrolet positrac, the 30-spline Mopar axles would fit. There were certain Mopar axles that could be machined to be used in the Chevy housing and that significantly increased the strength of the little Chevy 10 bolt. To do the same thing with the AMC today would be easier because you can get custom axles or convert to Mopar axle housing ends and get brakes that will work. Back in those days, such options were not available. Like I said, it would not surprise me that it would work.

And with that said you wonder why Moser wants you to send them your old axles before they make new one

Couldn't you just order the side gears first to verify that they fit,
then go ahead with the axle shafts, shims, clutch packs order after you've determine that the gears fit the housing? You could always return the gears if it's a no-go, correct? Both the Twin Grip & the Sure Grip diffs are 2 piece case Power Locks, and the clutch packs interchange, so there's a good chance the gears swap too, but no one can say for sure till someone tries it. As far as the Green Bearings go, I've had them in a Mopar car axle for almost 20 years, and they've handled everything I could throw at them and more (1969' automotive B-body Dana 60 w/35 spline Moser's in a Jeep Comanche built for trails) |

I held off ordering Mosers until I broke down the unit and damage therein. Moser only needed my axle length dimensions, no sendy, which is what the Dr. needed. I think the fit is a go. Both basically Dana 44 with diff spline count. Concern is the gain in strength @ spline compromises any drive-ability but Im being too paraniod is more likely. I'll look into Mopar forum - would have info. I wonder if their design deviates from the orig Mopar at all.
