Any tips on installing the cover on a 20 for a 72 Javelin so it won't leak?

Clean all the gasket mating surfaces with a rag and carb cleaner.
Apply a thin layer of Permatex Ultra Blue on both sides of the gasket. Smear it thin on the gasket with your finger. Bolt the gasket and cover in place. Let it set for a day before filling the diff case. -Steve- |

The AMC design of the cover seal is the best of any axle I know of. A true o ring. I have never had to use any sealant but the surfaces have to be clean and straight including the groove in the housing. I suspect if you are using the stock cover that is where your problem lies. At a minimum I would wire wheel it but if its been pried off before its probably bent. I am currently using an LPW cover which I think is the best made for the 20..... No sealant no leaks and its got a drain and fill plug so you shouldnt ever even need to take it off

I'd go to town on the mating surface with a wire puff ball and around 100psi. Needed much more to clean up the mating surface of my Dana 30. That thing was nasty.

Place the cover on a flat surface like a piece of glass. That oughta tell you how flat it isn't.....
Tweak accordingly to get it flat. bolt hunks of angle iron (not little stuff either) across a couple of holes then do the same opposite each other (like opposite handles) and tweak as needed to restore flatness. Make the bulge at the bolt holes flat again by using the ball end of a Ball Peen Hammer to tap lightly on the bulged out side. Using something flat and small like the side edge of a cold chisel to back up the other side of the hole. Solves most of the troubles..... oh yeah, clean off ALL the old gasket material too.
