I have a 3700 lb 72 matador with 2.73 rear and a mild 401,in need of a new cam.
When I built the engine 15 years ago I used too big a cam, don't remember what, but it really
Lopes and doesn't start pulling hard untill around 3000-3500 rpm.it is real lazy off the line.
I plan on a cam change, need help deciding. Let's hear some advice.
I want it to pull hard from 1500-1800 rpm, and redline around 5000-5500 rpm.
The 401 came out of a mid 70s wagoner.
30 over sealdpower pistons,stock heads cut 30 thousands,scorpion roller rockers,offey 360 intake,
Headman headers, 2.5 flow masters 750 vac secondary Holley.msd distributor and 6al.
It feels ok if u kick it at 60 mph and downshift to second(727 auto) pulls hard .
I don't care how it sounds at idle, I just want it to pull hard off idle to around 5200 rpm.
I know cam tech has changed a lot in 15 years.
Car is a cruiser , not a race car.
Years ago I had another 401 with a elde performer cam in it, it pulled like crazy right off idle, but ran out of
Steam around 4500 rpm.
Help?

You might have good luck with the Summit 8600 cam, should meets your needs and is very affordable.

I have benn looking at the lunati 10100702 voodoo cam
It is called a tq monster in390-401 engines,1600-5800 rpm.
I have one of these in a 455 Pontiac all stock, ci intake and ex, and it pulls real hard from idle to 5200 redline.
In a 3700 lb 4-door rebel, 3.15 gear.
Ps my comp is 145psi on comp test.
Ps I will look at the summit cam.
Thanks

Do you know your actual compression ratio? Does the engine have stock 1972 pistons and heads? Is it 8.5 : 1 ?

The 455 Pontiac is an entirely different engine than your 401. The Pontiac is undersquare with a 4.15" bore and 4.21" stroke. It will make way more bottom end torque than your 401 with a 4.165" bore and 3.68" stroke. I would cam the 401 quite a bit less than the 455, if I was looking for the same results.

I have had good success with Edelbrock performer plus cams for the street. The part # Is 2132 it goes from idle to 5,500. We have sold a ton of these. They are not a rock and roll cam. Most people like them due to being a real torque type cam. Just my two cents.....

2.73, Lets face it, It will not pull real hard until 20 or 30 MPH , a torque converter may help.
Put a worked over 904 in it with the good gear set in it.

I like the elgin version of the amc group 19 cam. I would also recommend based on your requirements listed rhoads lifters. they definitely wake up the engine under 3,000 rpm but they will be noisy at idle...And they will smooth that elgin cam out to almost no lope warm at idle..but it sure is a runner in my experience
