I've always wanted the tires balanced with the least amount of wheel weights, which requires
moving the heaviest part of the tire in the right position. It does look better to index, but I
doubt AMC did that originally.

Index them and have the weight put on the inside of the wheel. Like Chuck said, these are the details that set cars apart from the rest.

yes I figured a_m_c didn't think about that or worried about that but it does look good I was also worried about having stick on weights when a_m_c probably use the outside weights. thanks guys
