On old article in that link they mention using higher stall Ford C4 converter, is it direct fit at trans side? Flex plate wont be bolt on but it should be easy to adapt.

Really not much available in terms of what to do with these things. You can certainly get a convertor made for them, but that's about as far as it goes.

AMC did offer a shift improvement kit at the early end of the 69 model year. ( Part No. 4488283 )It includes some minor parts for the valve body. The kit raises shift points a little and increases firmness of the 1-2 shift. These changes were incorporated as a running change in 69 and up production.
You can also crank up the line pressure with the vacuum modulator adjustment. This will raise the shift points and increase firmness as well. If you crank it up too high the shifts will be very delayed and harsh or it won't upshift at all.
It takes quite a few clockwise turns of the adjusting screw to make a difference.

Yes, part of the standard service procedure, best to buy a test gauge kit to make sure you keep any increase within reasonable limits.

So George, what you are saying is that if I run a later valve body, say 71 it will incorporate the shift improvement upgrade.

Yes, the modulator is adjustable. There's a screw adjustment inside the stem where the hose attaches. You need a very slim straight blade screwdriver. Turning the set screw inward (clockwise) raises the line pressure and correspondingly, the shift points. It takes a number of turns to notice a difference.
The factory pressure specs were set low primarily to make the shifts as soft and imperceptible as was the norm then of typical passenger car use. The settings were not spec'd for performance. Increasing the pressure raises the shift points at all throttle settings short of WOT, makes the shift transitions occur more quickly and more positively.

Crank up the pressure, give the car a road test and adjust accordingly. If you go too high you'll find the shifts very late and harsh. As they say with food seasoning, adjust to taste. You'll not hurt the trans by raising the pressure.

Western Red, the valve body modifications took place during the 69 model run so I'd have to assume that all valve bodies after that point had the changes. I'll reiterate: the factory pressure recommendations were strictly for smoothness and were too low for any kind of performance use. Raising the line pressure really wakes these transmissions up as far as shift quality goes.

Any thoughts on raising the line pressure by shimming the pressure relief spring? That seems to be something else that is suggested often. I know in the Aussie BW35 transmissions it is called a 2 cent shift kit because you use a 2 cent coin to shim the spring, probably some other denomination in the US.
