Could you install a line lock? That way you can lock the front wheels too until you get the parking linkage worked out it may be worthwhile insurance, but you probably dont want to splice those pristing brake lines

line lock needs continuous power to hold and they're not rated for extended periods much less the battery drain.

There is a mechanical version of a line lock:
http://www.awdirect.com/finditem.cfm?itemid=8737 Recovery units use them, I suspect it would be a more trouble than fixing the trans. |

Shoot, yes. Back in the 70's when I worked on trucks, there was a cam sort of lock - push the brake pedal, flip the lever and the brakes were locked on.
Flip the lever back to release. It was like a hydraulic parking brake. But get that tranny over here and we'll fix it! |

You could "roll your own" brake lock. You'd need a pressure rated valve (rated for 1000+ psi). Just plumb it into the rear brake line. Apply brakes, close valve, and the brakes will be locked. Open valve to release. Since the rear line runs under the driver's side floor (along the "frame" rail) this isn't hard to do.
Note that a fluid lock/valve is not intended for extended periods. They are intended to supply maximum braking for tow trucks and similar vehicles for a short period (say an hour or so). If there is a problem in the braking system that's locked (leaking wheel cylinder), the brakes won't hold long. That's why the unit in the link has a pressure switch that sounds the truck horn when pressure drops. This isn't a good solution to replace a parking brake. Better to keep a set of chocks in the car. The valve would be fine to hold the car in place while you get out and set the chocks though. Fix the parking "gear" -- might not be that much trouble. |

Today I drove the car for the first time since the day it came home. By the time I covered the 2 miles or so between the muffler shop and the body shop PARK decided to work again! It must have been gummed up or stuck from not being used. I'll definitely keep an eye on it but the trans seems to be working fine now!

Interesting how things work out sometimes!
Drove mine 8 miles last night - the first long drive for it in over a year, although it's not finished. What a feeling - so I can sort of imagine. |
