I haven't driven the car yet but have realized that Park does not work now. The TSM doesn't show the Park mechanism as being accessable with the trans in the car, only for the aluminum BW's. Park is inop even when manually shifting the lever from under the car without the shifter linkage attached. Any ideas?

You've counted the "clicks" or detents and moved it manually through the gears? (*I see you DID disconnect the linkage! Good)
Pan off? you should be able to see the linkage work, even if you can't resolve it easily. There's mechanical linkage running back there. Sorry, don't have my pics/manual handy now. |

I dont think you can move the lever into park from under the car with the linkage disconnected because you have to depress the lockout button on the shifter for it to go into park, if I recall correctly. There is a procedure in the TSM for adjusting the linkage I would reconnect it and go through those steps first, if the adjustment is off even a little it might not go all the way into park.

Actually, yes, you can run it through all positions with the shifter off.
That interlock is built into the shifter. Both the M12 and M11 can be "run through the positions" with it disconnected.
First thing, make sure you can get it into park with it disconnected (troubleshooting, start with the lowest or least number of factors)
If it will go into park disconnected, then you know it's not tranny but is linkage, shifter or adjustment.
If it will not go into park with it disconnected, then it's transmission trouble. And it sounds like you are already that far.
You can get to the M12 parking pawl from under the car with the pan off, but to remove the parking pawl assy, you have to remove the tailshaft housing.
It's tricky in the car, but a lot of that linkage can be removed - there's a nut holding the shift detent onto the shift lever going through the case, and some pins to pull, etc. but if it's the parking pawl itself, then you remove the tailshaft housing. The "park" parts are at the very back, last thing on the output shaft.
I used to rebuild automatics where I worked - these were not my favorite, but I wasn't too deathly afraid of them either.

Thanks for all of the info. The trouble is definitely within the trans itself, unfortunately. Since there is still a chance to make Kenosha we are going to pursue plan B: that is test/service/repair the parking brake instead!

It's really too bad you weren't closer - we'd check into getting park fixed for you. You'll want those p-brakes working well, anyway - take no chances on that car!

Won't hurt to throw a set of chocks in the car either! I have no parking brake on mine, just park on the trans, and keep a set of light weight steel chocks in the back, just in case. Never have had to use them, but better to have and not need than need and not have!
Most likely the parking pawl has broken or is worn on the end. It's usually that and not the gear on the shaft (well, looks sort of like a gear). Once that gear is worn it has to be replaced -- and the whole trans has to come apart. On the M-11/12 there is a short rod going from the shift lever just inside the trans to the lever that activates the parking pawl. You should be able to see the rod by dropping the pan. The rod is held in place with little hair pins. It's possible one of those pins broke or came off and the rod fell out. You'll have to drop the pan to find out though. |

Yes, it's very possible that that's all that is wrong - that rod came loose.
Unless someone keeps putting it in park while still rolling, I've actually never seen the park pawl worn badly enough to need replacing (like I say, unless abused)
Normally there's no real movement so nothing to wear it.
My guess, it's something simple.

Great info, thanks all! Luckily the parking brake works like new so I plan to wait until after Kenosha to look into the park problem. I will take along wheel chocks just in case. Have to pick up a fire extinguisher too! |
