I  was hoping a member could remind me of which exhaust manifold bolt the dip stick tube bracket bolts to. The tube is installed in the M12 pan and loosely bolted to the last exhaust manifold bolt. But it seems it could be also bolted to the second-to-last exhaust manifold bolt. Don't remember.Confused I pulled the engine and M12 several years ago to rebuild. All work is done and finishing up on loose ends.

Also, has anyone run into interference with  using free flow manifolds and 2.25" header pipe with the M12 dip stick tube? Appreciate all replies. Thanks

The back bolt is correct. The other rear bolt would secure one end of the spark plug heat shield if you have them. Make sure your dipstick tube has the round metal gasket at the end where it enters the pan. It looks much like a garden hose washer made of thin metal. .

The washer "george w" is talking about is cone shaped also.....it is basically a chush washer to seal the dipstick tube to pan interface.

As if things weren't complicated enough. I installed rebuilt 1973 dog leg heads and free flow exhaust manifolds on my 68 AMX 390 with M12 tranny. Calls for 2.25" exhaust head pipe. The M12 a/t filler tube is i  the path of the exhaust damper aka heat riser valve. There is not enough room to install the damper or exhaust head pipe. Any ideas.

A google search of installing headers with a M12 a/t transmission dip stick tube came up with multiple AMCFORUM threads posted on the subject. Does not seem the M12 a/t dip stick tube is compatible with free flow exhaust manifolds or any set of headers. So I laid under the car looking up to find a solution working with what I have. See last post. Tomorrow, going to Home Depot to get copper flex/bendable plumbing tubing 3/4" x 30" to make a pattern with. Then shape original dip stick tube to match as closely as possible. May have to cut and mig weld. Also have oxy/acety to bend with. Then if necessary, take a slice out of the intermediate 2.25" dia. exhaust head pipe and bend a wee bit away from the a/t filler tube and mig weld. I'm "winging it". ....not winning it yet.LOL

I had a ‘72 360 in a ‘69 AMX and I used log exhaust manifolds for dogleg heads (not rectangular ports). Worked well, no interference issues and the dogleg heads still produced good power.

After reading your post sweatlock... thinking I'm doing something wrong. Yeah it's tight where the tube goes so I removed the dip stick tube, installed the damper and intermediate pipe and then mounted the dip stick tube last. And, this order of events worked! The dip stick tube does need to be dimpled a wee bit to clear the exhaust flange below the heat riser valve (damper). Adding the dimple will allow the bracket to be secured by the last exhaust manifold bolt. I should note that I ordered/installed Walker factory replacement intermediate 2.25" exhaust pipes for a 72-73 Javelin to mount to the '73 free-flow dog leg exhaust manifolds and dog-leg cast iron heads on the '68 AMX 390.
