The replacement modulators sold for an M11/M12 appear to be much smaller than the original one that I have. Do they function the same, and is there anything else that needs to be changed or adjusted before installing one?

Long time AMC fan. Ambassador 343, AMX 390, Hornet 360, Spirit 304 and Javelin 390. All but javelin bought new.

Some good info in the pinned post above, wish it had come up in the search results!
Is there a way to test a used one off the car? The one I have is leaking fluid so I assume it's bad.
