I have an M11 tranny from a 1968 AMX 390 floor shift car. I had the tranny overhauled. A guy wants to buy it for his 290 column shift Javelin. I have the converter as well. Is this a bolt in???? Thanks.

The M11B should have been the original trans for the 343. The 390 auto was the M12.

While the 290 will bolt to the M11B or M12, you'll run into two flexplate issues.

1) The original auto for the 290 would be the M44 automatic. It uses a six bolt converter whereas the M11B and M12 converters have four studs.

2) The 390 is externally balanced and I believe the 290 is neutral balanced. Many years ago I ran a 290 I got from a salvage yard with the M12 flexplate and transmission. Had a nasty periodic vibration above 45 MPH.

I thought all AMC engines where externally balanced.  Can I use the 390 flex plate on the 290?

I wouldn't, that's what I did and there was a vibration above 45 MPH.

If you have the original 290 flexplate you could have the 390 flexplate balanced to match it. Then it should work.

The 290 4bbls. in the AMX used the M 11. You could drill the M44 flex plate to bolt the M11 convertor.
